Wade Miller?

I'm getting sick of this Mike Jackson and Danny Wright being on the 2004 Sox argument. Look at the Spring Training stats, and tell me whom should've made the team.

Marte, Schoenweis, Takatsu, and Koch had worse numbers than either Jackson or Wright. Jackson also had an ERA of 1.93 through April. Ozzie started mishandling him, and he fell apart.

I'd be happy with secondary pickups of Mike Matheny and Wade Miller. Both would be positive aquisitions. In fact, Matheny could be a very good pickup, but unless something changes I figure Big Ben will be the starting catcher with Burke their and Hankins on the backburner (whom I happen to think will be a solid platoon guy).

Sox are paying Contreras $6M this year and $7M next year.  NYY takes on $2M in 2005 and $1M in 2006.

$6M and $7M for a starter is chump change?  And only a cheapskate would pay that paltry sum?

So, the Sox locked up Buehrle for a few years, but somehow that's Reinsdorf's fault because Buehrle signed the contract?

Your blind hatred is getting in the way of logic.

Garland is cheap for a fifth starter huh??? 4 million?? hahaha what team are you really a fan of????? :lolhitting

Contreras is the 4th starter at this point in time. The Sox may say Contreras is better then Garland but he's done nothing during his tenure to prove me that.

He was a stupid acquisition. I don't doubt his talent or potential, but you don't pay 6 million a year for another two years soley because of that. I'd of much rather seen that money spent this offseason on a guy that is proven and could step in and 6 million would easily do that.

Like I said at the start of the offseason the wild cards to this season will be Garland and Contreras. They live up to their potential and the Sox have a hell of a rotation, even if they don't add anyone but an innings eating fifth starter. But I don't want to see the Sox do that and hope they don't.

My flaw is paying 6 million soley for potential. Garland was a little high, but lets not round up, 3.4 mill is different then 4 mill. Considering his age and value on the trade market, it was a good signing.

Plus the fact that he throws innings and typically keeps the Sox in games.

I sure hope if the sox are sucking it up at the trade deadline that they deal contreras. Better yet if they dealt him this off-season. :)

Could we PLEASE give him one full year before we give up on him? What else could we have traded Esteban Loaiza for at the offseason?

Does anyone know if his entire family is now in Chicago?

I'll wait for the "We could've used that money to sign two free agent pitchers this offseason" post, but I don't have any faith in Reinsdorf signing one FA pitcher, let alone two.

I just think we could throw diaz out there and over a full year have a 5.50 era for basically nothing compard to contreras. He will always be the same pitcher he is now, dominant for four starts in a row then three starts he will give up 25 combined runs. He not consistent enough for my taste for six million per year. I know his immediate family is here by the way.

What else could the Sox of gotten. They could of picked up a AAA or AA prospect. I don't remember if the Yanks still have Scott Proctor or someone of that mold. Solid arm, lefty, could turn into something and the Sox would have oh so much more cash on their side.

Fact is, the move was quite risky from a monetary standpoint, imo.
