This is why we will never get FAs at market price

2 quotes regarding Matt Clement, from his agent:

"I think the overriding factor became where he thought would be the best chance for him to win for all three years of the contract he was going to enter into. Boston and the Angels have dedicated ownership and management to have them in contention year after year."

"Who wouldn't want to pitch in front of their family at Fenway Park?"

It may not necessarily be true but the perception is that:

a) Our ownership is not dedicated to winning (and this perception gets worse when Maggs says the same thing)

B) We do not have any allure of Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, Yankees stadium etc etc

Sad but this is what it is....

Hard to argue with any of that. Oh well!!!

That's all bulls***. It was all about the Benjamin's. The agent just wants to make it seem like it wasn't.

Let's not blame Boston for paying the money and Clement's agent for blatantly lying. What's truly bulls*** is the White Sox don't have prestigue or a commitment to winning.

You're correct to assume it was all about the money, but its rather odd how the teams (Angels/Boston) which offered the most are in the best position to win.

Agreed 100%

It is not about what we believe....it is about what the players believe ....and everything that I have ever seen as a Sox fan tells me if we do not overpay for FAs we do not get them for the reasons mentioned above

See Belle for a perfect case in point

Whether or not it's reality that the Sox aren't committed to winning, it's definitely the perception around baseball, so that does make it that much harder to convince free agents to join them.

If the Sox had been able to win their division either of the last 2 years, that perception would probably have changed and more players would've been more likely to join the Sox. It doesn't take much to change the perception, but winning something is key.
