December 18, 200421 yr How does our early season schedule look in regards to using a fifth starter? This year we didn't need one for quite some time if I remember. This could impact how the staff shapes up.
December 18, 200421 yr Let's just say this; if we don't sign a starter or trade for one without giving one up...we're in trouble.

This could impact how the staff shapes up. Last year we did everything we could to avoid the 5th starters spot from coming up. Including going to a 4 man rotation. I really dont want to get into that spot this year. Was it me or did the 5th spot seem to come up on saturdays when we were on national tv too many times. YIKES

If the schedule ran perfectly, no rain outs, injuries, tired arms or guys going ineffective; if Ozzie never juggles the rotation to get match ups, then the 1 starter would get 36 starts, 2-4 would get 35 each and the 5 guy would get 21. No baseball acumen here, I just lined up the schedule and if the 5 number came up with an off day during the last turn made it the 1 number. Kind of makes you hesitate to pay some guy $3-4 million for 21 starts. The season never runs perfectly, however, if it did the 5 starts would be sporatic but all over the season, even early. Here are the ones I figure on clean, pristine paper:

It's gonna be nice and shiny and ready to turn out that days losing pitcher. Why dont we just forfeit all those games now and be done with it. Save Sox fans the misery of watching the carnage.
December 18, 200421 yr I wouldn't sweat our national tv appearances. look at the tba's on the sox schedule at whitesox.com they will be on national tv
December 19, 200421 yr look at the tba's on the sox schedule at whitesox.com they will be on national tv 5th Starter schedule : April to May : Jason Grilli May to June : Dustin Hermanson June To July :Neal Cotts 1 game in July : Arnie Munoz (he gives up 15 runs and Ozzie will keep him in) next game in July : Felix Diaz Then after that we may trade for another starter , if we're not out of it. If we are we may just white flag it again.
December 19, 200421 yr Author Great job TLAK! That's what I was looking for. Of coarse the season never runs perfect but it does seem that it is possible to limit the need. Don't get me wrong, I would prefer a rock solid five. P.S. If you were that thorough in the bar you probably aren't reading this at 7:30
