To Keep or Not To Keep?

While my league is substantially more complicated than what I will explain here, I'd just like to get opinions on whether I am getting good values on who I am keeping. Therefore, I am keeping it simple.

Here is the gist of things, $275 dollar cap, 5 x 5 league, there are 12 teams.

You must retain 6 to 10 of your players from the previous season.

Positions are as follows: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, Middle Infield, Corner Infield, 5 OF spots, 2 Utility Spots

5 Starting Pitchers, 3 Relief Pitchers, 2 Pitchers (Relief or Starting)

In total, you have 25 Roster Spots plus 2 minor leaguers, which are irrelevant to this discussion.

So what I am going to list is the list of 9 players I have compiled that I am most likely going to keep along with their dollar values.

Randy Johnson $39 - I figure I have to keep, especially since he's a Yankee

Jason Schmidt $26 - No brainer here, especially if healthy all year

Mark Buehrle $15 - I am on the fence on this, but decent value

Freddy Garcia $9 - Again, the Cell scares me, but worth the risk (I think)

Zack Greinke $5 - Good value as a 5th guy in my rotation

AJ Pierzynski $1 - No brainer

Paul Konerko $7 - Again, have to keep at this price

Hideki Matsui $16 - On the fence

Jim Edmonds $16 - Good value, health is a concern as he grows older

So basically, just anyone with good fantasy knowledge, your two cents please. I am trying more or less to decide if these guys are good keepers at these dollar values.

The main ones I am concerned with are Randy (although I am certain he will go higher in the auction if I let him go), Buehrle (can he repeat his high K totals), Garcia and Matsui.

Any further comments are welcome as well.

I'd keep Matsui, especially if guys like Pujols, Arod, or Beltran are going at $30+.

Matsui I think is gonna put up some monster numbers next year.

Exactly, my main reason for taking him over edmonds is health reasons. If it was just a regular league though i would take edmonds.

Here's my advice aboz, I'd actually let Randy go but that's tough to let someone of his quality go and I'd definitely keep the other 4. As far as the position players you mentioned definitely keep aj, pauly, and Edmonds. For me it kind of depends on how other outfielders are priced for whether or not to keep Hideki. Just my advice aboz.

I'll admit I don't have a lot of experience with auction leagues, but I read a lot of stuff and play a lot of fantasy baseball. You're getting pretty good value on most of your guys based on the material I've seen, but you're a bit high on RJ. 40 is about the most I ever see on a player, and almost never over 35 on a pitcher (although this is for a 260 cap with fewer positions). This is especially true since you are keeping 4 other pitchers. I'd let him go and try to use the money saved on a stud infielder, preferrably with some speed. However if you really want to keep him and think he would go higher, don't let me stop you. Garcia, Buehrle and Matsui are all dead on. Personally I might let Edmonds go, he's coming off a better season than he normally has and he was healthy for once. One other thing to consider is that going with a ton of pitchers is a risky proposition, it's usually a better idea to load up on position players. Do you have any other potential position keepers, or closers with any ability? If you could grab someone like Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins or Michael Young, or Lidge or K-rod for a decent price, that would be a solid move.

I want to know about his relievers also. Because in a twelve person league like this you really need to try and lock up one stud closer and a couple decent closers. I have never been stupid and gotten gagne in ike the second or third round. I would rather get dotel and say mota several round later. While saves is a category it is not the most important.
