Chris Widger

Just curious to what Chris Widger's status is with the Sox this season when he doesn't make the team? I am assuming that he is out of minor league options. My personal preference is to have this guy in Charlotte ready to go if someone goes down on the southside. Can someone please clear this up for me?

Don't hold me to this, but here is what I think the situation is. Widger is signed to a minor league contract and is not on the 40 man roster, so the option thing is not an issue. He can be assigned to Charlotte, unless they have an agreement that Widger can shop himself around if he doesn't make the team.

Thanks, sort of what I thought. Kind of like the scenario with Jose Santiago and Vic Darensvourg from last year. Either way, I like this guy in our system.

Side note- if my typing is off tonight, forgive me, with the significant other and my 18 month old daughter in Florida this week, in conjunction with my only day off this week, let's just say, I went out and enjoyed myself tonight. :cheers

Chris Widger is a non-roster invitee and he has no minor league options left. He would have to clear waivers and sign a minor league contract with the Sox to be sent down to Charlotte.

He has already signed a minor league contract.

The White Sox signed Chris Widger to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Widger will compete with Ben Davis and Raul Casanova for the backup job behind A.J. Pierzynski.

Wouldn't Widger still have to clear waivers to be sent to Charlotte?

I really don't think so as he's not on the 40 man roster. He might have this option, though:

Armando Rios rejected his assignment to the minors.

Rios, who was signed to a minor league contract by the Twins in January, is now a free agent. Mar. 29 - 4:09 am et

Are there any better situations out there for Widger though? If the Sox are shopping Davis, then you'd have Burke and Chris as backups depending on which one the Sox would decide to keep as the backup unless they went with the 3 catchers. I'll say this though, it's definitely a good problem to have, Widger's play in ST has certainly opened some eyes around here.

Widger is hitting a respectable .265 (9 for 34) this spring and he seems to know what he's doing behind the plate. After hitting .350 (7 for 20), Ben Davis hasn't seen any playing time. I know they don't want to overwork our catcher's knees during Spring Training but it seems kind of fishy. It's almost like they don't want Davis to lose any trade value.
