April 19, 200520 yr Steve Phillips praised the Sox on Mike and Mike int eh mornign this morning. He said that they didn't build a team they way he wanted to (too easy jokes here so don't botehr) but he said that doesn't matter as long as the GM, manager and players believe. So he praised the Sox pretty heavily so now some of the posters can orgasm now that they finally got mentioned on national tv. Anyways, the real point of this post was to bring up a bizarre point that was made. Greenberg, an old Score guy who is really good, made a big error. He started talkign abotu Buhrle and how good he's been this year but how he never lived up to the hype he had coming in. He was implying that Buehrle was basically an underachiever. Mistakes happen and are more forgivable than most on soxtalk tend to believe but Mark was a 38th round pick and is one of the great overachievers in White Sox history. He gave Phillips the chance to correct him and Steve didn't take it-likely out of politeness.
April 19, 200520 yr What hype? I was there for Buehrle's debut in 2000 at the Cell and hardly anyone knew who the guy was when he came in to throw an inning in relief.
April 19, 200520 yr Steve Phillips. The guy is the GM of ESPN radio...right? Why do I find it so damn funny that he keeps putting himself on as a "guest"? Everytime I hear him I just picture him calling into the show and saying he wants to be on the show, and Mike and Mike just roll their eyes and "play along" with him. What kind of "expert" is he, really?
April 19, 200520 yr Author What? Steve Phillips was the GM of the New York MEts and a former player who works for espn as an analyst. Gm of espn radio?

April 19, 200520 yr Author Rock, I was hoping an e-mailer or caller would correct them but I had to go to a very EARLY class
April 19, 200520 yr They do a good job of discussing teams, outside of the typical ESPN bias, on that show. Plus, Greeny loves Chicago teams and not just the chubs. Phillips was blasting the Sox for their offseason moves, this preseason. Just like he blasted the Dodgers and is giving them all the props in the world.
April 19, 200520 yr QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 01:36 PM) Everytime they announce him they announce him as "our own GM". Because he was an MLB GM and now he works as an analyst for them, so they say it like they have a GM working for them. Edited April 19, 200520 yr by Kalapse
April 19, 200520 yr And he was a s***ty GM at that. He was the MEts GM and there is a reason why he is out of work currently. The guy is sometimes insightful, but basically just talks out of his ass. This is why they always try to keep his answers short and never give him too much leash to work with.

What kind of "expert" is he, really? I remember Farmer ripped into Phillips before a White Sox game recently. It might have been on opening day. "You'd think he'd look at the roster before predicting the White Sox to finish in fourth place. Third place? Okay. Fourth? You wonder how much this guy can evaluate talent."
April 20, 200520 yr Phillips jumping on the Sox bandwagon after all the offseason BS? Boot his ass off.

April 20, 200520 yr QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 05:31 AM) Greenberg must have been thinking of Garland. That's what I thought too.
April 20, 200520 yr It seems a lot of Sox talk posters want these "Phillips type bandwagon jumpers". It's like the Sox aren't really a good team unless the national media pays attention. Don't they also know these Phillips types will be the first ones off the bandwagon once the sox lose a few games in a row? I don't care what the experts say. As long as the Sox can beat the better teams of the AL more than they beat the sox [the twins, red sox, yankees, angels etc], we'll know for ourselves how good the sox are.

I could accept it if he said .. I was wrong about this team. But, to start talking like he knew it all along, just doesn't cut it with me.
April 20, 200520 yr Kruk also seems to be touting the Sox more. And Garland is indeed the guy who was hyped. Former Number One pick. Dominated at AA and AAA. Game up and went straight into the rotation during the 2000 division championship season. Garland came up several weeks ahead of Buehrle that year after Eldred blew out his elbow in the first or second start after the all-star game. Buehrle pitched one inning of mopup in a blowout win against the Brewers. Only Baseball America subscribers knew who he was.
