For the first time since 1999, Sox games will be broadcast in Spanish. The team announced Monday that it has reached a one-year deal with Univision Radio, WRTO-AM 1200, to broadcast 20 games in Spanish, beginning with Tuesday's game against Kansas City.

"We're focusing tremendous effort on reaching out to Chicago's vibrant Spanish-speaking communities, and making White Sox baseball accessible to them is an important--and long overdue--first step," said Brooks Boyer, the Sox's marketing chief. "The fact that we have so many players and coaches who speak Spanish as a primary language makes this opportunity even more exciting and timely."

Boyer, noting the heavy Latino population in the areas around U.S. Cellular Field, said he hopes that broadcasting the games in Spanish will lead to better walk-up ticket sales.

Hector Molina, who broadcast Sox games for WIND-AM 560 from 1992-99 and has worked with the Bears, Bulls and Cubs, will provide the call for WRTO. The Cubs don't have a Spanish-language broadcast for their games.

Sox did this back in the late 60's or 70's, can't remember exactly. The radio color guy was Chico Carrasquel.

Good idea by the White Sox.

Especially with as many Latin players as the Sox have on their roster. It really gives everyone someone to identify with.

Off topic, I heard a song this morning where the very last part is in Spanish, here are the words:

********

Que lindo sera traella a Cuba

La reina de la Mar Caribe

Quiro solo visitarle alli

Y que triste, que mi no puedo, vaya

********

Any of you youngster music hounds know what the song is? Hint, old song.

They should broadcast all the games in Spanish.  Chicago has what - the 2nd highest Spanish-speaking population behind LA?  Definitely an untapped market.

I'd love to see it as well. I would imagine if this 20 game thing worked out, that the package might be expanded. It could be good for both the Sox, and the radio station involved.

As a matter of a fact, it would be interesting to try to work out a deal in Japan as well, if that is even possible.

I'd go one step further and say they should take the TV feed from Comcast and play it with Spanish broadcasters on a Spanish station. Maybe only a few games at first to test the response, then go from there.

I gotta imagine that just the exposure would be worth it to the Sox, even if they have to practically give the broadcasts away. If they could workout something where at first the stations just keep whatever advertising they sell, in lieu of actually paying the Sox right now, I would jump on it. Then if they prove they can get ratings in Spanish, then look to work out a deal for money. Right now, just tapping the market and exposing the Spanish-speaking community to ONLY the White Sox, who happen to be loaded with Latin players, could really have a big effect in the turnstiles... especially if they do this for some years.

Agreed, Fernando has been doing Dodger games for a few years. Of course the new ownership really screwed Fernando and treats him like crap.

But its about time the Sox did this. Nice job Brooks :cheers

Set it up where you can use the SAP button the TV. All they would have to do is tie in the feed from the spanish station.
