The list of Cubs players who have been booed at Wrigley Field this spring grew by one Wednesday when Ryan Dempster was jeered off the mound in the ninth inning after blowing a one-run save opportunity to the New York Mets.

The Cubs came back to win 4-3 on Derrek Lee's 10th-inning home run, sending most of the crowd home happy.

But Lee said Cubs fans are going overboard with their booing, particularly when it comes to manager Dusty Baker.

Lee believes Baker is being maligned for problems that aren't of his making.

"Dusty doesn't control injuries," Lee said. "He doesn't control some of the stuff that's going on out on the field. Those things are out of his hands. He's getting unfair treatment."

Lee was particularly upset Tuesday night when Baker was booed vociferously while taking starter Greg Maddux out of the game with a 6-0 lead after 100 pitches and 62/3 innings.

Maddux admitted he was tiring and ready to come out.

"I understand booing," Lee said. "But when they're booing Dusty when he came to get Maddux, then they don't know the situation there. If you're going to boo, understand what you're booing.

"You have the right to boo. That's fine and dandy. We understand you want us to win. But there is a time to boo and a time not to boo. That's the one thing that bothers me."

Lee said it's fine to boo the players for not performing.

"If you want to boo me because I'm doing badly, that's fine," he said. "But I didn't think Dusty deserved to get booed because it was a situation Dusty had nothing to do with."

"I understand booing," Lee said. "But when they're booing Dusty when he came to get Maddux, then they don't know the situation there. If you're going to boo, understand what you're booing."

But doesn't D. Lee know that Cubs fans are the best fans in baseball?

Wrong, the most knowlegable

it seems that fans that don't know much about baseball boo the wrong people. in New York, they have the Mets and Yankees, and lots of those Yankee fans would be Mets fans if the Mets had been winning more the past 10 years. so last year the Yankee fans boo Jeter (who should have a lifetime pass from getting booed in New York, simply because he was the main player on a team that won 4 World Series in 5 years, same with Mariano Rivera). Dusty Baker pulls the Cubs out of the gutter within 1 game of the World Series, and I saw a sign last year at the final Cubs game that he should be fired. so now they're going to boo anybody that blows a 9th inning lead. this quote proves my point:

"Lee was particularly upset Tuesday night when Baker was booed vociferously while taking starter Greg Maddux out of the game with a 6-0 lead after 100 pitches and 62/3 innings."
