Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye, who had postseason ankle surgery, has been practicing with the No. 1 defense and should be ready for the first training camp workout, coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday.

"He'll be full go, and he's close now," Smith said.

The Bears were cautious with Ogunleye, who didn't get on the field until last week. They continue to be careful with fullback Bryan Johnson, who is recovering from a foot injury and isn't working out.

"He'll be ready for camp," Smith said.

The Bears conclude off-season workouts Thursday and report to training camp at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais on July 23. The first workout is July 24.

Benson update

Serious contract talks with first-round pick Cedric Benson have yet to begin, but the running back from Texas is in no hurry. No first-round picks have agreed to terms, so Benson doesn't figure to sign until well into July. The Bears go to camp early because they play in the Aug. 8 Hall of Fame Game, making a holdout more likely.

"I haven't gone through it before so it's hard to say how important it is to be on time," Benson said. "But it is important for players to be there for their teammates' sake, not so much for preparation, but for whole aura and morale."

Benson was the fourth pick in the draft, but comparisons to last year's No. 4 pick don't fit because San Diego's Philip Rivers is a quarterback. Benson's agent, Eugene Parker, represented the No. 3 overall pick a year ago, Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who signed a deal worth $3 million per year.

Bradley deal

Second-round pick Mark Bradley practiced for the first time after signing his five-year contract Tuesday.

"My comfort level with Rex Grossman is growing every day," said Bradley, a wide receiver from Oklahoma.

Bradley's agent is his father, former NFL player Danny Bradley.

Off the field

Defensive tackle Terry "Tank" Johnson faces possible NFL discipline after being charged with unlawful possession of a handgun last week. The NFL suspended Indianapolis safety Mike Doss for the first two regular-season games after he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges after he was arrested for firing a handgun May 27 in Akron, Ohio.

Signing

The Bears signed 6-foot-4-inch, 310-pound offensive lineman Anthony Oakley, who was in training camp with the Cleveland Browns last year after going undrafted out of Western Kentucky. They waived wide receiver Jamin Elliott, who split his first three NFL seasons between the Bears and Patriots after the Bears selected him in the sixth round in 2002.

Good to get Bradley signed he's to raw to miss camp time.

Poor Jamin Elliott. that guy has been shuffled around like a checker piece.
