May 4, 200322 yr Just got back from work from Kane County Stadium, where the Single A affiliate of the Oakland A's play. These guys are fundamentally sound in every aspect of the game. I can't remember the last time I've seen a franchise with such fundamentally sound players as the A's. The game was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th. One man on first, and the batter lays down a perfect bunt down the first base line. The runner eventually moves to third and the catcher Jon Sumoni tries to take the ball into right field and hits it through a hole. Cougars win 5-4. If only the Sox played fundamental baseball, it would take them a long way. The Cougars are currently in first place with a record of 22-8. CWSOX45

May 5, 200322 yr Then the Barons no doubt had some decent coaching. Part of coaching is instructing, and part is correcting when you do something incorrectly. Just about everybody will occasionally do something fundamentally wrong sometime; it just needs to be corrected on the spot so it doesn't happen again. You know, like Little League. I doubt very much if JM corrects anybody when they do wrong.

The Barons bunted a lot last year, and it didn't matter if it was the cleanup hitter or not. You won't get away with that in the Majors.

May 5, 200322 yr I love that CW. But such an inning wont ever happen under Manuel. If we do get guys to first and third like we did last night the next guy will try to pull and well fail like usual. This team is incompetent of playing small ball to their advantage. That is why we need Backman as the manager. JM relies on the long ball, and while that is exciting it just doesnt get the job done. Backman, while getting the longball occasionally, will use steals and bunts to let us score a good percent of the times we get a man on base...

You won't get away with that in the Majors. recent Trib article, Frank was talking about bunting again - I am anxious to see him do it!
May 6, 200322 yr he should..he could bunt a rocket down the 3rd base line and the 3rd baseman will be so deep he could beat it w/o a throw i dont how much this translates to playing in the major s but when played ball whenever i slumped (which was alot ) i always thought bunting a few t imes here and there help me start seeing the ball better and helped get my timing back

Whatever works - it is not how long the hit, it is getting on base and getting the hitting going -
May 6, 200322 yr At least we aren't the Cubs system. What I've seen of their Lansing A team, isn't all that great. After all it is the team they send players after killing animals on the field.
