I don't think underachieving starter is a fair label at all.  The kid was rookie who had skipped AAA. Pitchers need development time and Neal was getting his feet wet.  In reality he is still likely getting his feet wet preparing for a starters role in the future.

Underachieving starter in the eyes of those who expected big things out of him right away. Remember there were some people calling McCarthy a bust after he struggled earlier in the year, way too many posters have Knee-jerk reactions when it comes to players.

I'd think Konerko 2003 and Konerko 2004 would be right there as well.

There were signs that PK was turning it around, especially in the 2nd half of 2003. Also, PK is a known quantity. Cotts never gave a hint that he could be this dominant over such a long period of time. Underachiever or not, I just know that he went from someone who you had to worry about throwing 10 straight pitches over the batter's head to a pitcher where we're all whining about that he should be in the game.

I bold printed the key word in your post. That happens way too often.

Yep that's the Neal we all love (well at least only a HANDFUL at best) did at the start of the season. Always had faith though, and shows why you shouldn't give yourself a heart attack screaming if he doesn't perform straight away........

(I was always knew he was better than that Kevin Walker though, although some people didn't think so).

Hey DBAHO who else is in your sig? Bmac, Gio and the rest?

What I don't get is that Cotts appears to remain below Marte in Ozzie's eyes, since Marte usually pitches later in ballgames than Cotts.

Yet Marte has issued 30 walks and given up 38 hits in around 43 innings.

Somehow this hasn't cost us big time yet, but I'll pull my hair out if Ozzie has the same warped subsitution rotation in the postseason.

Ozzie is going on player history when it comes to Marte and Cotts. Marte has been ultra dominate in the past, where this is Cott's first great year. Cotts >>>> Marte, yet the fact that Marte has been a shutdown lefty reliever in the past keeps him ahead of Cotts on the depth chart.
