I think he helps this team the most when he is a pinch-hitter/runner and the so-such.
May 9, 200322 yr Hey baggs. I like the idea of Olivo batting 2nd. If he could handle the responsibilities involved with batting in that slot, and still learn the ins and outs of handling a pitching staff, I think he'd be very good there.

If he could handle the responsibilities involved with batting in that slot, and still learn the ins and outs of handling a pitching staff, I think he'd be very good there. i think so too..with his speed and ability to bunt..he could be real successful there...plus that means we can drop a bigger bat down in the order and not have so many automatic outs... i'd toy wit the idea of leading him off some games too...but i remember jason kendall saying the worst thing about leading off for a catcher is playing at home and having to rush in after the first inning and get all the gear off and get ready to hit...he said thats the biggest detriment to a catcher leading off...but with olivo's speed and what seems like better plate discipline he could be this team's answer to getting some speed up there...id feel much better with jimeneez 2nd than leading off...cause with jimenez's lack of speed might as well let frank lead off
May 9, 200322 yr You don't have to have blazing speed to lead off. OBP is the big key. Look at what Oakland did with Jeremy Giambi... that seemed to work out for them for awhile.

Look at what Oakland did with Jeremy Giambi... that seemed to work out for them for awhile. but you have to have some....and i dont think giambi in the lead off spot worked that well since billy bean dumped him for john mabry...i know the game has change..maybe past me by a little for my likes...but i really love a lead off man that can put pressure on the defense and be the guy to manufacture runs

But in the AL game, it's more of the Earl Weaver style of baseball.... wait for the three run homer. I don't agree with it, but that's the way it is. I'm more pitching, defense, on base percentage type of baseball.... moving the runner, etc.
