May 13, 200322 yr Guys.. have you ever heard of a player being asked to submit an essay type thing when they "might" be considered for the HOF? Kind of like a "why I should be in" thing?

Never heard of that. Maybe after the HOF committee has not voted them in and the players committee is considering them.
May 13, 200322 yr I heard Ron Santo is about to lose an arm too from writing this essay so many times.

Well.. this player has not yet even been on the ballot (and likely wont for several more years) and he received a request for a "letter". They asked him to comment on his accomplishments, contribution to the game, personal baseball related accomplishments, etc, etc.. I just thought it was odd.

I guess I always pictured the HOF voters being familiar with the cadidates as a prerequiste for being a HOF voter - maybe they have a little packet of info of each player on the ballot for the voters to review and either the HOF is too lazy to do its own reserach (or too cheap) or, in the alternative, maybe they want info from each person who will be on the ballot so they can't be accused of missing anything and thus costing someone some votes, or maybe something else - maybe nothing to do with the HOF voting but for their own archives and collection --

Kind of like a self evaluation? Perhaps "attitude" does have something to do with getting in..

While it surprises me to hear that it really shouldn't. I have never understood where the media in general (and definately sports writers) have this ego trip about being so important. Just vote with what you believe to be the best interest of the baseball HOF in mind. Why make a guy squirm by writing an essay?
