November 12, 200520 yr What do you expect of the big, young, 6-5, 240+pounder, lefty from Indiana? Really, really like this kid. Could he be a good one?

November 14, 200520 yr Well... he apparently has a long way to go. Wasn't particularly good this year at Winston Salem (actually, he was awful). Was he the one that struggled through injuries, or was that Lumsden (or, neither)? Anyways, he went 4-9 with a 6.73 ERA. His peripherals weren't very good, either. A K/BB ratio under two (79/42 in around 110 IP), while giving up ten homers. So... yeah. He's got some work to do. EDIT: Actually, I found something positive to latch onto. He had a GB/FB ratio of 1.42, which is somewhat encouraging... Edited November 14, 200520 yr by CWSGuy406
November 14, 200520 yr Author QUOTE(poorme @ Nov 13, 2005 -> 07:51 PM) i don't expect, but would like to see him at 1B. He can rake. Put up silly offensive numbers during college...I believe UCLA.
November 14, 200520 yr Whisler lit up a summer league a few years back (Cape Cod league, IIRC) and was basically thought of as the best power hitting prospect in that league. However, he's never really done much with the bat and pitching wise I still think he's incredibly raw. The Sox basically have to totally develop him and I've never been a fan of the move. That said he has the ability to throw quite a few pitches, but I don't personally think he has any great pitch nor does he have great command. He's still a major work in progress and I'd like to see him get back to 100% as well.
November 17, 200520 yr Well, I HOPE he stays healthy for a full season and gets that experience under his belt. Lefties with his kind of stuff don't come along every day. Not sure if having 5 pitches hurts him more than it helps him, but I would just hope for health and gaining experience, some success to build that confidence. When healthy, he has great stuff, but seems to be all over the place at times, which makes him succeptible to the big inning. We'll see, long way to go for Wes.

That's pretty encouraging seeing the minds of Baseball America think the kid doesn't know how to pitch. His stuff good enough to make that jump?

That's pretty encouraging seeing the minds of Baseball America think the kid doesn't know how to pitch. His stuff good enough to make that jump? In my opinion no. I don't think he has great stuff, although he has the ability to throw 5 pitches, none of them well. Good arm, but the guy wasn't a pitcher when they drafted him (I realize he was a starter at UCLA) but he's no pitcher. It was a bad pick and I've said it since day one. I hope he proves me wrong cause he's supposed to have pretty good work ethic.
