Genius and Insanity

The Brian Wilson comments inspired me to post this topic. It seems that many people or genius in their fields are also almost insane.

That is very true. I have a perfect example that I'll tell you all about later.

I personally wouldn't call Brian Wilson a genius, but I think most geniuses were probably considered insane. Writing pop songs just doesn't qualify you as being a genius, in my humble opinion.

He MIGHT be insane, though.....

EDITED to add that I just noticed the qualifier "in their fields", but I hold to my opinion regardless. I'm stubborn that way.... :D

If not insane, many are borderline idiot savaants.

Didn't Einstein have a closet full of the same suit because he didn't want to bother making decisions when he was getting dressed in the morning?

And if not insane or savaant, most peopel considered to be geniuses are are also considered to have been 'out there' psychologocally.

Zappa was a genius, pure and simple. And he wrote more than pop songs so just maybe he'll get the Critic Seal of Approval. :D

And he was far from insane, but he was always 'out there.'

Sorry, I really don't mean to be a prick about this ( although that's a character trait I can't seem to suppress :D ), but I guess I just have a hard time slapping the genius tag on songwriters. Or most types of entertainers, for that matter. I'm certainly not saying I'm right ( I never really do, I just spew opinions ), but entertainment seems disposable to me so I guess it doesn't register that highly with me. I love music and appreciate the talent involved, though. That's gotta count for something.... :D

From a guy who writes and plays music on a daily basis: Zappa = Genius. That guy was just incredible.

I don't expect any other opinion though out of somebody who always wished he could, but couldn't.

Oh, so now we're pulling rank, are we?

Well, since I can't build a clock, I guess I hope no one asks me what time it is....

Critic, Brian Wilson is a genius producer. Pet Sounds, Smile - the layering is amazing for its time, and Wilson is deaf in one ear.

Rex, I respect his accomplishments completely. The fact that he's deaf in one ear makes what he's done more impressive.

I just don't feel comfortable referring to any entertainer as a genius. I'm not trying to dismiss anything he or Zappa or John Tesh has done, I just don't personally feel right using the term "genius" to refer to an entertainer.

I'm sure it's just yet another personality quirk of mine.....throw it on the pile.... :D
