Turner Sports' Ernie Johnson has cancer

Featured Replies

Ouch. This explains the reason his face was so swollen on the one side at the ASG. Wish him the best.

Turner Sports' Ernie Johnson has cancer

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Turner Sports studio host Ernie Johnson revealed Wednesday that a swollen lymph node under his ear is the result of a cancer diagnosis he received in 2003.

Johnson released this statement:

"Two and a half years ago, in August of 2003, I was diagnosed with 'follicular' Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. This is a low-grade and treatable cancer -- not as aggressive as some other forms...The only reason I'm bringing my condition to your attention now is because the swelling of a lymph node near my left ear has become noticeable to viewers of TNT and there have been questions asked."

Johnson will continue to work throughout the rest of the NBA regular season and playoffs and will likely undergo chemotherapy treatment in June.

He is in his 16th year with Turner Sports and currently hosts TNT's NBA and PGA golf coverage, as well as TBS' Pac-10 and Big-12 college football.

Prayers out to you Ernie.

You've always been a class act.

Hope everything turns out alright.

Prayers.

Class act indeed.

I like Ernie, best of luck to ya.

He's always been a great guy from what I've seen on tv. Hope it all goes well.

I feel bad now for making fun of him the other night. I had no idea about the cancer.

Yeah same here, I just thought he was aging quickly.

here's a piece on TNT's Inside the NBA, and something on Ernie Johnson that I remembered when I saw him announce he had cancer last night:

Lost in all the joshing was the story itself, a wonderful account of Ernie and his family. Johnson and his wife had two children of their own, then adopted two more children -- one each from Romania and Paraguay, including an abandoned, handicapped boy who suffers from muscular dystrophy and a number of other medical problems -- one of those stories that you read and feel guilty about your own life, knowing that somebody else has been acting so selflessly.

that's from part two, and in case anyone wants to read the whole thing, there's a link to part one at the top. it's a good read, but I think you need Insider to read it.

AND NOW that I've searched for it, here's the USA Today piece that was mentioned in the article above:
