A's acquire Brad Halsey from Arizona for Juan Cruz

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Oakland A's today announced that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Brad Halsey from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitcher Juan Cruz. Halsey will be on the A's 40-man roster and will join the A's spring camp.

Halsey was 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA in four games, three starts, for Arizona this spring. Last year, he spent the entire season with Arizona and was 8-12 with a 4.61 ERA in 28 games, 26 starts. Halsey finished second among National League rookies in starts and innings pitched (160.0), ranked third in strikeouts (82), tied for third in wins and fifth in ERA. The 25-year old was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the eighth round of the 2002 draft and was traded to the Diamondbacks as part of the Randy Johnson trade on January 11, 2005. Halsey has a lifetime record of 9-15 with a 4.92 ERA in 36 career Major League appearances, including 33 starts.

Cruz is 2-0 this spring and has not allowed an earned run in 10.1 innings. Last year, Cruz began the season in the A's bullpen but posted an 8.49 ERA in 21 appearances before he was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on June 17. He went 5-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 13 starts for the River Cats and returned to Oakland in September. Cruz was 0-3 with a 7.44 ERA in 28 relief appearances overall with Oakland. The 27-year old was acquired from Atlanta in the Tim Hudson trade on December 16, 2004. He is 14-24 with a 4.36 ERA in 156 Major League appearances, including 23 starts.

Hmm, any chance we trade to get Vizcaino back?

That's sarcastic, but yet not at the same time.

Got him for less than that supposed Brian Anderson price eh?

The option of Tim Redding :crying :crying :crying

I doubt it. The Diamondbacks have really improved their bullpen (on paper, of course) from last season when they had the worst bullpen (5.40 ERA) in the entire MLB.

Juan Cruz

Terry Mulholland

Jason Grimsley

Luis Vizcaino

Brandon Medders

Jose Valverde

That's not bad compared to last season.

Halsey is a decent young pitcher but there's no way he has the same value as Anderson. Like I said, either Beane was high on something or that article was BS.

Pretty good trade for both teams. The A's didn't have a place for Cruz, and Halsey still has options. Cruz is a great arm in the bullpen, and with Duque as the 2nd starter, he may well get some spot start chances this season. Makes sense.

Cruz should love going back to the crappy NL in a crappy division.

Good trade for both teams. Oakland was not gonna make a deal with us.

Cruz sucks. He came up thru the Cubs system and did crappy. He only did good in Atlanta, b/c of Leo Mazzone, as most pitchers do, and then he returned to suckiness last year

I wouldn't discount it. Esp as Viz is due $1.75 mill, and the Dbacks have a lot of options in the bullpen now.

Cruz has friggin amazing pure stuff. I'm not surprised in the least that Kenny wanted him. Sometimes it takes a little while for a pitcher like Cruz to catch on...hell, look at Salomon Torres...he didn't have a good year until he was 30, but in 3 of the past 4 years he has been a very good pitcher for Pittsburgh.

Cruz is entering his prime years, so we'll see what happens over the next couple years.

Did the D'Backs get Cruz because they know we want him? Could he moved here in another deal? I wouldn't be shocked considering Sox and D'Backs have two recent trades with each other under their belts.
