ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- There are few instances when White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen offers a disclaimer before giving an opinion on a touchy subject.

 

But Guillen has been on the South Side long enough to know that any Sox-Cubs talk is viewed under a microscope.

 

Before the Sox' game Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the third-year skipper was asked if winning the World Series in 2005 made Chicago a Sox town rather than a Cubs town.

 

"If we played the way the Cubs played, there would be 2,000 people in the ballpark, believe me,'' Guillen said. "I know there may be some fans that are going to hate me for that, [but] it's a Cubs town.

 

"But it's a good time to be a White Sox fan right now, a great time to be a White Sox fan. You're not going to turn the lights off and on in one year.''

 

Guillen said the best way to remedy the slanted treatment the Cubs seem to receive is to keep on winning. That's why no extra incentive is needed this weekend, when the Sox host the Cubs for three games at U.S. Cellular Field.

 

"With the kids right now who are growing up in the city, it might turn around in 10 years,'' Guillen said. "If you're going to bring kids to the ballpark, you bring them on the South Side and see more stuff for kids. But if you're going to watch just baseball, go to Wrigley Field.''

 

 

 

First of all, Wrigley is mardi gras, with a ball game in the background. If you want to watch 'just baseball' it is NOT the place to go to.

Second of all, if he believes this to be true, than he shouldn't complain about biased media coverage.

Last, who gives a s***. Stop feeding into this idea that the Sox will always have an inferiority complex by making these statements.

I believe the Freddy quote is in regards to his success in day games. If he played for the Cubs, he'd be pitching in a lot of day games, thus he'd have more success.

 

As far as the quote about Wrigley, I don't know. He appears to be talking about kids entertainment at a baseball game. And if that is indeed the case, he's right. For a kid, the only thing to do at Wrigley is to watch a baseball game (a minor league game at that). The Cell offers much more when it comes to youth entertainment

 

Either way, I don't think its much to read into. Ozzie says a lot of things when he's trying to make a point. Or to be exact, Ozzie says a lot of things.

I read that in the paper this morning too. I think you can chalk it up to Ozzie mixing up his words as he often does.

It should be a damn good series. Cubs are going to have a large chip on their shoulder. I haven't looked forward to a series this much since we faced the Angels for the first three games this year.

No. Sox fans are just like any other fans. Put a bad team on the field and the fans quit showing up.

 

Cubs fans are the exception to this rule. They are the only team in the 4 major sports (that I know of) that can have 3 million fans show up to watch a last place team.

 

Of course having a major media outlet boasting about how "great" the ballpark is for 20+ years while essentially ignoring the other team in town helps too...

I honestly did not know that. I don't really follow football much though...

 

Aren't they also owned by the citizens of Green Bay? I know I'd go watch a team every sunday if I had a stake in their ownership so it makes sense. They also have a Yankees-like history of winning championships.

 

The Cubs on the other hand are the only franchise I've ever seen that actually embraces their losing.
