Kansas City gets 2008 Big 12 basketball tournaments VIDEO

The Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will return to Kansas City in 2008.

 

The men’s tournament will be played in the Sprint Center with the women playing in Municipal Auditorium.

 

The league office made the official announcement on Monday. The Big 12 also selected San Antonio as the site of the 2007 football championship game.

 

The basketball tournaments had been all but promised to Kansas City two years ago. The Big 12 did not award championship sites beyond the 2006-2007 school calendar partly to give Kansas City a chance to solidify plans for the new arena.

 

Kansas City was home to the first six Big 12 events with the men at Kemper Arena. The last Big 12 tournament was held there in 2005. Oklahoma City will play host to the men’s and women’s tournaments in March for the first time.

 

Much rejoicing from ISU and Kansas fans. Slight pissed offedness from the Texas schools.

 

I like the rotating plan. There's no goddamn reason to keep the tourney in Dallas every single year. OKC isn't a horrible spot, but then again, it's in Oklahoma.

Dallas is just trying to be a big city.

This is where it should be around fans who care about their college basketball. Dallas, their fans and media could care less..

I think it should be in the Oklahoma panhandle every year. Make Beaver, Oklahoma the place to be.

A lot of it probably has to do with the fact that Kansas and Iowa State fans are the vocal majority in KC.

 

Any permanaent move to the state of Texas and maybe even Oklahoma is a massive slap in the face to the north schools.

To play Devil's advocate, the Texas schools do make up 33% of the Big 12 conference, so it would make sense to put the tourney in the state with the most schools in the conference and the largest population both state and city wise(Dallas). Though a rotating location would be more fair to the other schools, similarly to the ACC rotating between Charlotte, Greenville, Tampa, and Atlanta.

I think the rotating championship is the best. It gives fans at all schools the chance to go to the tourney.

 

If it were to stay in Dallas, it hurts the fans of Colorado and Nebraska and Iowa State, as Dallas isn't exactly a one day drive.

Kemper Arena was called Hilton South for a reason. ISU fans love KC and KC loves them right back. Iowa could be a choice for the MVC tourney if they ever consider it in the future due to Wells Fargo.

I just want to know when it will be in Lubbock. They can make a rule that everyone who comes to the games has to come and plant a tree first, and then teach somebody how to drive the speed limit and use turn signals, not that I'm bitter or anything.

Pfft. The Red Raiders were never meant to join the conference.

Yeah, Texas got tired of dominating just A&M, so they needed another whipping boy, and here we are.

For reals though, it's the fault of Texas politicians that TTU and Baylor are in the conference.

True, but TTU wasn't chopped liver at the time, coming off of a 9-3 season in the SW conference in football with Zach Thomas and Marcus Coleman on the squad, and was solid in academics. Baylor on the other hand, was an coat-tailer in every way sports wise.

May not have been chopped liver, but weren't in the plans. I'm not sure if the conference was just going to go with 10 schools or what.

I think the Dallas media and fans do care, but that's ok.

And KC will be half full for Baylor-Colorado, but packed for KU-Iowa State. It always happens that way in the early rounds. For the final rounds, it gets fuller, unless you have upsets.
