It would be pretty cool to see that. :cheers

It seems that Sweeney is hitting for power finally... I know part of it is due to the Charlotte park but we play in a hitters park as well so its all good.

I wouldn't exactly call 5 HRs in 200+ ABs hitting for power.

Osprey spoil home debut for Electric City club

By MIKE TOWNE

Tribune Sports Writer

The Missoula Osprey, a trio of hard-throwing right-handers in particular, spoiled the home debut for the Great Falls White Sox on Saturday night.

Starter Hector Ambriz and relievers Ivan Cedeno and Jorge Perez combined to limit Great Falls to six hits — five singles and a double — as the Osprey earned a 4-1 victory before 3,628 fans at Centene Stadium. They struck out 10 Sox while walking three.

Great Falls, which put together back-to-back hits only once, advanced three runners as far as third base. Its only run scored on a wild pitch, by Cedeno in the sixth inning.

The Osprey collected six hits, all singles, off five Sox pitchers.

Ambriz, a UCLA product who was the No. 5 pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the recent college draft, used primarily a good fastball to hold Great Falls scoreless in four complete innings of work. He had three strikeouts and no walks.

Cedeno, a free agent from the Dominican Republic, earned the victory after allowing one run on two hits in four frames. He fanned six batters, three in the eighth inning after walking the leadoff man, John Shelby, on four pitches. He surrendered all three of the Osprey's walks.

Perez earned his second save of the young season, retiring the Sox in order in the ninth. The Domincan Republic free agent struck out Franklin Bautista for the final out.

"It was pretty decent pitching (by Missoula), but we didn't take a lot of good swings. We were kind of freestyling it up there," Great Falls manager Bobby Tolan said. "We were out of our element. The guys wanted to put on a good show for the home crowd, and they were trying to go deep too much.

"We'll get back on track tomorrow," he added, referring to this afternoon's (4 o'clock start) game vs. the Osprey. "We're going to be fine. We have a lot of good kids here."

Missoula, Tolan said, got a "couple of key two-out hits." But Great Falls contributed to the Osprey's third victory against two losses, "giving them a couple of runs" via two errors and a few other miscues like wild pitches.

"Overall we played pretty well. We were in it until the eighth inning," the first-year skipper said. "As long as we have a shot, I'll be satisfied."

A throwing error and a wild pitch by the Sox's second pitcher, Steven Spurgeon, allowed the Osprey to expand a 2-0 advantage to 4-0 in the fifth inning. Houston Summers led off with a walk and then raced all the way home when Spurgeon made an errant throw to first after fielding a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Perales.

Perales went to third base on the error and scored on a wild pitch.

Great Falls answered with a run in its half of the sixth. Leadoff hitter Santo Garcia laid down a bunt single, advanced to second when Lee Cruz drew the Sox's first walk of the game, took third on a fielder's choice and scored when Cedeno uncorked a wild pitch.

After Cruz moved to third on the wild pitch and Tyler Reves walked, Cedeno got Christian Acosta to ground into a fielder's choice.

The Sox had just two baserunners the rest of the way. Joseph Hunter was hit by a Cedeno pitch in the seventh inning and Shelby drew a four-pitch walk in the eighth.

Great Falls left eight runners on base, one fewer than Missoula.

Garcia had two of the Sox's six hits.

Gerardo Parra, the No. 3 hitter in the lineup, had a pair of singles to lead Missoula offensively.

"I know we're a good club," said Tolan, explaining that fans will "have to be patient" while the Sox get used to playing with each other over the next couple of weeks. "When we get (Michael) Grace back (from a minor injury), that will give us another bat."

And it will help when right-hander Kyle McCulloch, the No. 1 draft pick of the Chicago White Sox, is able to pitch. That should be in about a week, Shelby said.

Great Falls right-hander Tim Day (0-1, 27.00 ERA) is scheduled to face southpaw Jordan Norberto (0-1, 7.71) when the Sox and Osprey meet today.

He was named MVP of the Division II College World Series and earned Division II player of the year honors. Cruz, who was batting. .438 entering Saturday night's game, was the 10th-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in the amateur draft earlier this month. He had seven hits, tied for the team lead, including a pair of triples.
