If you had to be part of one, would you enlist professional help? Or at the very least get some professional advice?

Not a doubt in my mind, I would get help before doing it, or I wouldn't do it.

That was my advice as well. And if you don't have the time... then get the person in a emergency program.

A couple people taking someone out to dinner and telling them that they need help doesn't require a professional. An all out assault, getting in their face, tough love, etc. needs a professional. Depends on how severe the problem is.
