Kris Honel update

Featured Replies

What has happened to Kris Honel? I haven't been able to find out anything as to where he might be or if, unfortunately, he's out of baseball.

-- Doug, Arlington Heights, Ill.

Honel always has drawn a high level of interest from baseball fans in the Chicago area because many watched him or played against him while he was an All-State hurler for Providence Catholic High School. Honel, the team's top selection in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, looked destined for stardom following three dominant Minor League campaigns from 2001 to 2003. But he was slowed by injuries in 2004 and struggled with a 5.88 ERA for Double-A Birmingham in 2005.

In September 2005, Honel underwent Tommy John surgery, and he was taken off the White Sox 40-man roster last year. It's unlikely Honel will get a non-roster invite to Spring Training, but he should be ready for Minor League camp in Tucson, Ariz. From what I was told, Honel looked impressive throwing the ball near the end of the October instructional league in Arizona.

Where did this quote come from? In the Phil Rogers chat for BA it mentions Honel had an elbow surgery but it was not a Tommy John ligament transplant surgery.

I'm pretty sure it was a tommy john that he had.
