Freel is a huge crowd favorite in Cincy -- and cheap for a cheap small market team.

They've got no reason to trade him.

Everyone has a price. Cincy is desperate for pitching, bullpen especially. Remember last year at the deadline they acquired any arm they could, even Gary Majewski. They are desperate for arms.

I think I would prefer to try our own prospects rather than go after someone elses problems. I would support a move to get Aaron Rowand back though.

Carl Everett says hi, twice.

Carl Everett's just a dumbass.

Outside of Boston, what did he ever do at any point that said he had questionable character (ala drug or alcohol abuse, marital and/or other assault charges, or symptoms of insanity)?

He doesn't believe in dinosaurs and he has issues with homosexuals, neither of which will ever effect his play on a diamond, unlike aforementioned character issues.

Exactly, you have remember Kenny Williams generally goes after high character guys and will not hesitate to get rid of a troublemaker. Freel has some serious issues mainly having to do with booze and mental problems making him seemingly off limits to the Sox.

Cincinnati on the otherhand does not seem to mind his insanity/legal problems so there's really no reason for them to trade away a very good, youngish, cheap player.

*cough* Bobby Jenks *cough*

No thanks on Freel.

DUI guy and he's already reached his ceiling IMO. And his ceiling is a .270 hitter in the NL. He'd be lucky to hit that in the AL.

I remember watching him here with the Bats and was surprised that he ever even made it to the big leagues.

If we want to be a championship caliber team, he wouldn't be our leadoff guy.

Freel was terrible when he was given a full time role after the Kearns trade.

look upwards

Freel would not come cheaply (unlike Jenks) making him an incredible risk to any team who attempts to trade for him.

I mentioned wishing we could get Freel earlier back in the Sarge Jr. thread. I agree he'd be great to get. On Baseball Musings, he's ranked 2nd among center fielders in the Probabalistic Model of Range behind only Ichiro. Among guys who stole at least 35 bases last year, his walk rate is second only to Felipe Lopez. Plus he really hucks his body all over the field.

If we couldn't get him, I support picking up Kenny Lofton and sticking him in left field. Holy moley! 32/37 in stolen base attempts last year, 12 triples, 45 walks to 41 strikeouts. Holy moley, I say.

I like Ryan Freel a lot - as a player.

I would like to see us trade one of our starting pitchers to Cincy for Freel and Homer Bailey. Would Cincy do it ?

Ha....Homer Bailey might be one of the ten most "untouchable" players in all of baseball. And I'll state this again: Freel is a pathetic human being.

When he was with the Mets he lost custody of one of his children for "excessive corporal punishment."

Because he drinks and drives and talks to imaginary figures?

Well, I believe it was Everett's wife that was being bad to the kids, but, I agree that Everett is not a good guy.

Drinking and driving is the least of his substance abuse issues.

You act as if he's the only player to ever do drugs.

Something that happened atleast 10 years ago is still being held against him today?

That's a bad deal and all, and I feel sorry for the kid, but I really don't consider that a character issue today considering how long ago it occurred.

Hey Bob, got any ideas for the off-season? You seem to be pretty quick to shot down other threads, but I haven't seen you offer too many ideas? What would be your plan?

I have a few ideas. A lot of the reason I'm shooting down other threads is because they're 100% unrealistic. This team doens't need to reinvent the wheel to win. KW came out and said this team only needs some tweaking so my guess is he's not going to trade his best hitter from last season (Dye). Maybe I'm wrong. I can be part of the camp that says that the Sox haven't made any noise this off season so KW is working on something big. But I guess it depends on what you're definition of big is.

I think KW is playing this right. Wait for some pitchers to sign ridiculous contracts and then trade 1 or 2 of the starting 5 to the teams that didn't overpay for the Ted Lily's of the world.

My first concern would be to get a stealth bullpen. Based on recent rumor and speculation, I would assume that's coming when the Sox trade one if their starters. I would also think in this insane salary market the Sox could getting a couple of young pitching prospects, including one stud.

I woud then try to trade a package of prospects (including McCarthy or the stud prospect) for Crawford. If they can't trade for him, I'd consider Baldelli for lesser prospects.

I haven't had time to follow what every team has a surplus of that the Sox would want. But as long as a team has pitching to trade, then they should be able to substantially improve.

I Crawford is unrealistic, the next option would be to trade a SP for a young up and coming lead off hitter. I also would keep my options openf or Crede. Odds are the Sox won't be able to sign him any way. I still think A-Rod would become available and if the Yankees eat some salary, I'd have no problem trading Crede/Garcia for A-Rod and Sanches.

But back to the other rumors flying around. I don't see how this team is better with Manny and his ego and lack of heart and huge salary. Getting rid of Dye would be a mistake. I'd trade Thome or Crede before I'd trade Dye.

Bob

Freel plays REAL hard...which is great, but he also tends to get hurt, not necessarily DL hurt, but little minor things. He reminds me of Darin Erstad. Great hard-nosed player but nagging injuries will always keep them down.

Good idea, but no thanks.
