J.D. Drew to the Red Sox - 5 Year Deal per ESPNEWS

Pending a physical, per SI.

The last 5 years, J.D. Drew has averaged 119.6 games per year. Trot Nixon has averaged 114.

Since the start of 1999, J.D. Drew has averaged 118.25 games per year. That's over 9 seasons. And he's signing this deal while he's 31.

$14 million a year for 3/4 of a season on average every year.

You know the markets f***ed when Drew gets more money coming off a subpar year than he did coming off a career year two years ago.

This will be looked at as an epically bad contract in a couple years, although it won't be the only one the Red Sox have on their hands. Stupid.

And he's played 145 games in 2 of the past 3 years, with his one major injury being a broken hand he received while being hit on the hand by a pitch.

He's proven to be a pretty healthy player since getting out of St. Louis.

Thus, I'd imagine it will be closer to $14 million for around a full season and a .400 OBP.

So would you rather have Matthews for $10 mill, Pierre for $9 mill, Soriano for $17 mill, or Drew for $14 mill?

I really don't think this deal will be all that bad. He's pretty much proven to be healthy, and if plate discipline usually doesn't degrade by age 36. I imagine he'll still be around an .850-.900 OPS player by the end of his contract.

Just remember Drew did make a wise move opting out of his contract because he got a lot more money. This is still a far better deal than the one the Angels handed to Gary Matthews Jr.

But flat out you don't win in this free agent market unless you really are just a piece away from winning it all (in which case go ahead and overpay for a star).

I guess this deal is not done yet, there are some questions about his physical. Link
