Sunday Conversation

Featured Replies

I don't know if anyone saw it on Sportscenter, but they had the Sunday Conversation with Darryl Kile's wife, this week being the one year anniversary of his death. They also talked to his kids a little, he had two five year-old twins and a ten month-old.

Just painful to see something like that.

Yes it was. Tough to be a great father when you have a job that keeps you on the road for most of the year, groupies hanging out, etc.

I've never really looked at his stats, would he be considered for the HoF if he hadn't died?

No he was good, but not great. And it is a sad tragic story. I was glad to see the moments of silence and such for him.

In tragic cases like this, Baseball takes care of its own, to its credit. She is still collecting her husband's salary from the Cards, and she gets $160 K for life, plus all sorts of psycological support.

I think it's doubtful he would have made the HOF. 133-119 career with a 4.12 era. The years in Colorado hurt him ERA-wise. He only won 20 games once, never won a Cy Young. He would probably have had to dominate for the next 5-6 years to be considered.

Kile was on the most recent HOF ballot (Clemente clause?). The 5 year waiting period was waived. He didn't get enough votes to remain on the ballot in future years, IIRC. Still, the guy was good pitcher and anytime someone dies at such a young age it is a tradegy.

Growing up in a Cubs household (my parents and 3 siblings are Cubs fans), I learned to hate the Cardinals. I was in Canada in the Rocky Mountains when Kile died - it made me really sad. Even though I hate the Cardinals through sickening osmosis, that was devastating.

I wish the best for his family. Kile wasn't dominant most of his career, but he was hitting his prime and had the best "Uncle Charley" I've seen since Blyleven or Nolan Ryan.

Hopefully he's in a better place.

And for the record, yes, the other 5 members of my family were Cubs fans - but I'm a White Sox fan. I'm also a borderline genius and a master of public relations, politics, AND geology - so take from that what you will!! :D

If I had become a Cub fan - I would be living in a trailer park and picking my ass and sniffing my finger while I screwed my cousin.

I heard he will be on the ballot for the first time this year. Last year he received 7 write in votes.

Definitely got a little teary eyed during the sunday conversation and when it was over just shook my head and said "wow"

How did he die again? I forget. I know he was found dead in his hotel room, but what was the COD?

An artery or two was blocked. Family history.

I stand corrected ... I don't research this stuff... just go from memory. And I'm getting old!
