Family Guy continues Ratings Surge

Featured Replies

Man it keeps on trucking, gee I wonder what the FOX exects are thinking now

They keep up these ratings and sales on the DVD out now and the new DVD out in September, Seth MacFarland might be forced to take some action ;)

How can anyone in Fox's exec board still be employed after dumping Family Guy but airing crap like "30 Seconds to Fame," "Stupid Behavior Caught on Tape," and "Paradise Hotel."

Lucky There's A Family Guy!

6/01/2003

Lucky for Fox, that is. Video Business magazine has published this article (free registration required to view) describing the success of the recent Family Guy - Volume 1 release, and discussing the possibility of new-to-DVD Family Guy features:

In a surprise even to producers of the show, nearly 400,000 copies of a DVD collection of Family Guy episodes have been sold since 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment shipped the three-disc set last month, according to the studio. Although nowhere near the 1 million-plus units sold of shows such as The Simpsons, Friends and Sex and the City, the number is pretty amazing considering the sitcom was never a ratings hit and aired sporadically during a good chunk of its three-year run on Fox.

What's more, repeats of Family Guy have proven to be a major hit on Cartoon Network. Earlier this month, a Thursday night repeat drew nearly as many viewers 18 to 34 as hits such as South Park and Trading Spaces and slightly outdrew MTV's hit Sorority Life 2.

Newfound buzz has even prompted talk from creator Seth MacFarlane of a direct-to-DVD feature-length Family Guy, although that's still in the early stages of discussion.

"It's all pretty insane," MacFarlane told Daily Variety. "It's certainly some vindication and a sign that the show is as popular as we always suspected."

There's more to the article, including confirmation that the lost episode, "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", is intended to appear on the Family Guy - Volume 2 DVD release (now firm for a 9/9 release), so jet over there and read up (and just overlook the article's error on the disc count; we all know there's four discs in the first collection, not three).

The success of the DVD set is good news, and hardly surprising to the fans of the show. The concept of a new direct-to-DVD Family Guy feature is certainly news to us, though, since a mere six weeks ago in our interview with Seth, he said that "There's always talk of Family Guy making a reappearance, whether it'd be on cable or wherever, but that's something that's sort of a sidebar thing at the moment, I'm sorta focusing on the new stuff."

But, when asked "how could the fans show support for Family Guy reappearing?", Seth's answer was, "The best thing they can do is buy the DVD set. Those are the hardest, more accurate numbers. It'll be a hell of a lot more revealing than Nielson ratings."

Well, it seems that the people have spoken!
