We've probably lost a division title or maybe even 2 since 2001 because of not being able to beat KC and TB, particularly on the road, and this year we go 6-1 on a week of road games against them. The recipe was pretty simple in that our offense was just plain bad, instead of epically bad like it usually is, outside of Danks first start, our starting pitcher went at least 7 innings in every win so we avoided the pen quite a bit, and when we did use the pen, they were ok.

 

Of note:

 

Ryan Bukvich in his first 2 outings gave up 3 earned runs and 5 hits in 1 inning. In his 8.2 innings since, he's only allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits, and Thornton threw 4.2 scoreless on the trip. Also, Boone Logan and Bobby Jenks are good.

 

Paul Konerko walked only 60 times in 152 games last year. Through exactly half as many games (76) this year, he's already just over 2/3 of the way to last years total with 41 walks. That's what happens when you don't have lineup protection, and just imagine how many walks he'd have if Paulie had hit at all before Memorial Day.

 

Jim Thome hit .233 in both May and June, but his OBP took a staggering dive from .425 in May to .337 in June. He's hurt, he can't hit nearly as well as normal, and other teams figured that out and started to pitch to him more in June. Is a DL trip necessary?

 

For all the love Buehrle is getting here for his bounceback year, Jon Garland is actually slightly better in ERA (3.15 to 3.33), has a similar record at 6-5 to Mark's 5-4, and similar WHIP at 1.16 to Mark's 1.10. And unlike Mark, Jon is coming off an 18 win season. One day he'll get the credit he deserves among Sox fans.

I thought our offense was good in Tampa.

It stunk in KC.

Today's game was typical. Nobody could get a clutch hit.

Lucky that Garland knows how to field his position.

He slowed down that sure base hit up the middle that woulda tied the game.

Like I said, if you can get him to waive his NTC and find some valuable prospects in return, trade Thome. People closer to the situation than any of us keep saying how injured he's been/is.

Thome has been atrocious. He looks like he is swinging a soggy piece of bologna up there most of the time. He isn't swinging with the same kind of power. Either his back still hurts, or he is just trying not to re-injure it.
