August 21, 200718 yr Charlotte has the day off. Gio and Birmingham are down 3-0 in the 7th and the Barons are looking for their first hit. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...monaax_biraax_1 The Hogs are off. Kanny won 2-1. Carlos Perez: W (4-6, 5.50), 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K Carter: 1-4, R Allen: 2-4, 3B, RBI http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...kanafx_savafx_1 Great Falls up 1-0 in the 4th. Poreda on the mound. Bristol with a twin-bill. Lin (5-5, 3.43) lost game 1, 7-4. Sergio Morales: 4-4, 3B, R, RBI http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...jcyrok_brirok_1 Game 2: scoreless in the 2nd.
August 21, 200718 yr I must say, Poreda has made me eat some of words against him... but then again, he is only advanced rookie ball for a 21-22 year old 1st round draft pick. He should be easily handling those players.
August 21, 200718 yr Author The Barons made a game out of it but lost 4-3. Gio didn't pitch all that bad. Gio: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K Shabala singled to lead off the 7th, spoiling the no-hitter attempt. Great Falls shutout Casper 4-0. Poreda (2-0, 1.24): 5 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K. He's clearly ready to move up. Mabee: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 K Retherford: 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 1 RBI http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...grfrok_casrok_1 Bristol won game 2, 4-3. Infante: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K K. Gilbert: 2-3, R Oney (.136): 0-3, 2 K http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...jcyrok_brirok_2
August 21, 200718 yr Author If I'm not mistaken, Oney is 21 and wasn't Ozzie the Sox starting SS at 21?
August 21, 200718 yr I hate how Poreda is still starting in rookie ball. He needs to be in low ball right now. Gio/Egbert need to be in AAA and other moves could be made too. What is the Sox's deal with so little player movement?
August 21, 200718 yr Here are some other players' stats with their first teams in comparison to Poreda, keep in mind he's had plenty of college ball Poreda in GF 1.24 ERA 36.1IP 35 Ks (20 yrs old) Gio in Bristol 2.25 ERA 24 IP 36Ks (18 yrs old) Eggy in GF 3.37 ERA 58 IP 58 Ks (21 yrs old) Broadway in WS 4.58 ERA 55 IP 58 Ks (22 yrs old) Buehrle in A-ball 4.10 ERA 98 IP 91 Ks (20 yrs old) [in majors less than a year later] Garland in Rk-ball 2.70 ERA 40 IP 39Ks (18 yrs old) McCarthy Rk-ball 2.76 ERA 78 IP 79 Ks (19 yrs old) McCulloch GF 1.61ERA 22.1IP 27 Ks (21 yrs old) Although a good start doesn't guarantee much, it does show that he wasn't a complete waste by any means so far as some feared. He's been great (minus the minor arm pain earlier, when he didn't play).
August 21, 200718 yr QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Aug 21, 2007 -> 02:52 PM) I hate how Poreda is still starting in rookie ball. He needs to be in low ball right now. Gio/Egbert need to be in AAA and other moves could be made too. What is the Sox's deal with so little player movement? On Gio I would guess that the Sox just don't want to rush him, at least not this season. He's been good lately but not as good as he was earlier on in the season, so he may possibly be getting a little tired. Egbert I can't explain though, he should be in AAA for sure.
August 21, 200718 yr QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Aug 21, 2007 -> 04:52 AM) I hate how Poreda is still starting in rookie ball. He needs to be in low ball right now. Gio/Egbert need to be in AAA and other moves could be made too. What is the Sox's deal with so little player movement? Could be that Poreda has more to fine tune [iIRC, didn't his secondary pitches need work] than some of the others. If this is the case, then having have success at the lower level makes sense. If he has his act together this yr, next year I'd expect him to be in W-S.
August 21, 200718 yr Poreda is still in Great Falls for two reasons, one he's settling in and getting comfortable and working well with the pitching coach. Two, Great Falls is a competitive team this year with a chance of going to the Pioneer League playoffs. These types of things are important in the realm of relationships between the White Sox and local ownership. Great Falls is largely a community owned franchise so it's more important they have a competitive team. More wins = more excitement for the franchise = better attendance = all sorts of positive after effects.
