If the Sox sign Dotel and Colon and assuming Crede is traded for a prospect so Fields plays third what are the Sox chances of making the playoffs ?

 

With what would appear to be a very good BP and a pretty good rotation with some depth and a lineup that looks pretty capable, could the Sox hang with Detroit and Cleveland ? For how long ?

IMO, signing Colon only makes this team worse.

 

This team can hang with the others right now if Contreras, Danks, and Floyd are decent. I think that if the Mets and Royals have decided they have no interest in Colon, it's pretty bloody obvious that he's only going to downgrade even from the young guys we have.

Sisco is likely to start the season down at AAA, still working as a starter, and is under the Sox's control for 1 more year.

 

Down at AAA, that gives us Egbert, Broadway, Haeger, and Sisco right now to my eyes as potential replacements if one of those guys flames out or gets hurt.

I think we're contenders if the guys we currently have step up.

 

I think signing Colon makes us take a step backwards, because I really don't think he's going to give anyone anything of value this season other than L's, and the games you lose seeing if he's healthy are games you don't get back.

It all comes down to Danks and Floyd. The lineup will take care of itself. I don't think Colon would be an upgrade over anyone in his current condition.

To answer your question, the moves you listed would not likely change this teams likelihood of winning the division, which is currently significantly behind the chances of the Tigers and Indians.

Well, to me this team needs Dotel or the like to have a solid bullpen. As it is, the pen seems about average at best. I don't think Linebrink is going to be a big success but coupled with Dotel it could be special.

 

I also feel that expecting Contreras, Danks and Floyd to make 30 starts each and with some consistency is a HUGE stretch. And, who do the Sox have to fill in that could do better ? Nobody. I'd atleast take a chance on the guy that's been one ofe the best pitchers in the game the last 10 years.

 

The Sox and other teams want him enough to sign him but the holdup is his contract demands. Now, I would like to have him for a reasonable price this year and with an option for 2009 but apparently he's asking for much more.

i really hope to see haeger get a shot if one of floyd or danks fails (or both for that matter)...i really think he could have a solid career...he will never be an ace, but he will in all probability be a guy who can take the hill 30 times a year and give you a 5 ERA...which over the course of 30 starts is fairly valuable assuming you pay him league minimum......id rather see that than give the ball to colon and have him start 20 games for 5-7 mil (maybe more who knows) and have a 5 ERA....id say haeger has a much better shot at consistently being a back of the rotation starter for a handful of years than just about anyone in our system...its just he doesnt have that upside that guys like floyd or poreda will have

5 years ago, no team was interested in Estaban Loaisa. Not the Mets, not the Royals, no one. KW gave him a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. He very easily could have won 25 games in 2003. 3 years ago, several teams passed on making a waiver claim for Bobby Jenks, we know how that turned out. I'm not saying Colon will do that, but explain to me why, if they can get him cheap, it makes this team worse? If he can't pitch, he won't pitch.

 

5 years ago, no team was interested in Estaban Loaisa. Not the Mets, not the Royals, no one. KW gave him a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. He very easily could have won 25 games in 2003. 3 years ago, several teams passed on making a waiver claim for Bobby Jenks, we know how that turned out. I'm not saying Colon will do that, but explain to me why, if they can get him cheap, it makes this team worse? If he can't pitch, he won't pitch.

 

Agree. Depth, especially pitching, never hurt anyone. Now, if Colon is used in the wrong way, then yes, he'll hurt the team. If he's thrust into the rotation right off the bat without showing that he's 100% then he'll hurt the team. Nothing wrong with bringing him in to win a rotation spot in ST like Loaiza did. A little competition for Floyd and Danks if nothing else.

That's IF Colon will accept that deal. Loaiza was scrap heap material...never did anything. Big Bobby was a reclamation project that hadn't done nuthin' in the bigs. Colon won the Cy Young award. He probably doesn't think he needs to win anything...and you know what, he may be right.

And that is a good thing. Being a Rule 5 pick and a bullpen pitcher really stunted his growth. He still has all of the potential in the world, he just needs the innings and his confidence rebuilt. He has to work on his secondary pitches if he ever wants to make it here, and starting at AAA will allow him to do that.

I agree 100%. Think of Colon as a lottery ticket. The Sox aren't going to play if he requires a committment of any sort, but a smallish one year deal is totally worth it, for the potential of even a few months of a Cy Young type pitcher.
