Like YASNY said, a SP doesn't have to pitch 5 innings in an ASG in order to get the win.

And you got this information from.....??

From watching AS games in the past and seeing the starter go 2 innings and seeing him pick up the win.

Ahhh. I see. Looking for some confirmation. Nothing on MLB nor ESPN. I've seen a bunch and been to 3... don't remember the starter ever getting the win. And since they don't have that stat... can't check it out.

Can anyone else help?

Found some stats on it. Looks like just one. Lefty Gomez in 1935.

The 5 inning rule is waived in the ASG.  I remember Steve Stone starting and pitching 3 perfect innings the year he won his Cy Young.  Never saw anyone pitch more than 3.

I believe the starting pitcher (and maybe all pitchers) is limited to 3 innings. The starter used to go 3 innings routinely when I grew up, as long as he didn't get knocked out. It has just been the last 10-15 years that things really changed in how the All-Star game was played.

I don't think there's any limit at all. The only reason pitchers only go 1-2 innings nowadays is because managers are so hell-bent on having everyone play.

I do know that starters have won many times throughout the years, just don't know specifically which ones.

It is just not that often that a team takes the lead early in the game and never relinquishes it.

I do believe there is a limit of 3 innings on at least the starting pitchers, but can't swear to it.

No limit according to everything I'm reading. Most go 1 and 1/3. Pedro was the last to go over 2 & 2/3 in at least the last 7 years of records that I'm finding. But I'm not finding anything like Clujer posted. Why would they not have that as a stat..? Weird.

They usually limit the starters to 2 or 3 inning so nobody loses their All-Star pitcher in a meaningless game. Also, you could have this scenario. Torre is managing the All Star team and his Yankees have a weekend series against the 2nd place Red Sox. Torre could pitch Pedro 7+ innings so his Pedro could not pitch against his team that weekend.

that is my understanding - limit of 3 max, slowly shrinking however - in days of yore, starter always seemed to go 3 full innings, but new school ASG managing has cut that down

mlb has a report that Halladay may not play. If that's the case it's a very easy decision who starts. I know some of you think it already was an easy decision :P
