kystevie Posted July 13, 2008 Share Posted July 13, 2008 First of all let me say I enjoy Sox Talks topics almost every day but rarely post wife and I are coming to Chicago this week, will be going to the UC for Joel Osteen on Fri 18th then to the Cell for the game on the 19th Can anyone tell me a nice motel such as Holiday Inn Express (or something that won't break the bank) that might be somewhere in between? Also i'd like to visit the Paradise Pup or the White Palace Diner Do they have good Itialian Beef and Polish? Rex Hudler Posted July 14, 2008 Share Posted July 14, 2008 I recommend Priceline. My parents just stayed at the Hotel Sax for $126/night and loved the location. They took buses and the EL everywhere and needed to take a cab. If you are visiting downtown Chicago I do recommend a 3-day visitor pass for transportation. You can use it unlimited for 72 hours on all trains and buses. it costs like $12 each and is worth it for the convenience alone. You can get them at www.transitchicago.com. I've always had good luck with Priceline. Have stayed at the Westin Michigan Ave, the Crowne Plaza and the Midland Hotel (it was being converted to the W Chicago near the Sears tower) all for less than $100/night. Rex, thanks for the advise, I booked with Priceline and have reservations at the Palmer House Hilton for the weekend Dont know much about the public transp there, hope to be able to take the ell or buses around the city thanks for your longtime reports on the barons as well, I certainly appreciate the info.. BUt luckily you are very close to Taylor street where the Original Al's Beef is located. Its just west of Halsted on Taylor. As for cheap places to stay, priceline it because the prices fluctuate, especially during tourist season. Palmer House is right in the middle of downtown Chicago. Its a great spot, and a nice hotel. There is tons of public transit, make sure to use the conceirge service for specifics. Tons of hotels to choose from - check Expedia/Orbitz for prices, also try some of the pre-pay only sites like Priceline or Hotels.com. You'll find a deal somewhere. There won't be anything that is truly "in between" the UC and the Cell. At least, not anywhere you'd want to stay. But from downtown, you can get to both easily, via train or car or bus. I thought the room in the hotel was pretty ordinary. Not much special at all. However, the lobby/street level was awesome. Very nice, old with intricate detail. The location was solid as well. I enjoyed my stay but the room itself was not as nice as the Westin Michigan Ave or the W Hotel (near the Sears Tower). Both of those hotels have beds that are among the most comfortable I have slept in. Enjoy your stay, get out and explore a little. It has maps, schedules, etc. http://www.transitchicago.com/ Guys, thanks for all your feedback/info transitchicago.com was a big help as well really enjoyed the weekend sans the games themselves but it was a great experience used the L-buses to get around with no problem also got to go to al's-paradise pup-whites palace-giardanos and generally just see the sights of chicago the Palmer House was nice as well thanks again!
