"... and I aprove this message"

Featured Replies

When did the "... and I aprove this message" thing start? I seem to remember not to long ago that ads didnt include that. I must confess that before 2004 I never followed politics. So, maybe it was always there and I never noticed.

McCain-Feingold finance reform bill I believe, they did that so that candidates had to take ownership of their ads and everything they say and couldn't run attack ads by proxy and whatever else.

Close, it was the 2002 BiPartisan Campaign Reform Act.

Awesome. thanks.

Wikipedia:

The impact of BCRA first started being felt nationally with the 2004 elections. One immediately recognizable impact was that, as a result of the so-called "stand by your ad" provision, all campaign advertisements included a verbal statement to the effect of "I'm [insert candidate's name] and I approved this message."

McCain has sponsored a lot of great initiatives, but this wasn't one of them. ;)
