According to Yahoo's Gordon Edes, the Mets are deep in negotiations with free agent starter Derek Lowe. However, the Mets have yet to make an offer.

Damn. I think he would make a great addition to our rotation.

No way the Sox would give him the combo of years and dollars he's asking for.

What's he looking to get?

$16M X 4 years...

And he turns 36 next June.

Pretty decent signing for the Mets for this year. Beyond? I don't know.

Can someone explain to me how a team can be "deep in negotiations" yet has not made an offer?

I guess just talking in terms of mutual interest and years/$$. Besides that, I have no explanation.

But that wouldn't be negotiation would it? At least not "deep" negotiation.

No, not exactly "deep". But they could just still be working out the kinks of a possible deal.

Baseball is only occuring in New York it seems.
