Draft rumors?

Featured Replies

I just heard on B&B that there's a rumor floating around that we're going with a leadoff guy/centerfielder for our first pick?

Is Danks2 just not in our plans? Didn't Bell say he was ready?

I'm confused

Danks future isn't as a leadoff hitter. He's better in the middle of the lineup if his power potential comes through.

fast leadoff hitters are always a necessity, having just 1 is not enough

Danks is much more of a potential #2/#3 hitter than a true leadoff hitter. It is pretty consistent with what all the draft places are saying. It will either be a college arm or a toolsy athletic OF. Check the futuresox forum, we got tons of draft discussion on there, more than any other site will have on the web regarding the Sox (by a long shot too).

In most mock drafts, I've seen the Sox taking a toolsy OF in highschoolers Mike Trout, Everett Williams, Reymond Fuentes (Puerto Rico) and collegiate guys Tim Wheeler (Sacramento State), Jared Mitchell (LSU), A.J. Pollock (Notre Dame), and Brett Jackson (California). I really like Mike Trout and Reymond Fuentes here. I also like LHP Matt Purke if he drops (which I've seen on some boards). I've seen HS 3B Matt Davidson falling out of the 1st round on a lot of boards and I'd love it if we could get him in the supplemental or 2nd round.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'd LOVE the Sox to go with the high ceiling high school players.

Purke has insane salary demands, Trouts are probably out of the Sox price range as well. Fuentes is a good talent, but more of a comp pick.

Pollock should be there, but again, with prep demands that might not be the case. Mitchell, same thing. Everette Williams is good too. I expect one of Williams, Mitchell, Pollock to be there and that is who they pick if there isn't a pitcher on the board that they grade higher (ie, Brothers/Arnett/Sleeper).

Davidson probably doesn't make it past one of the Angels 2 picks in the 1st round.

How long do you think C Luke Bailey will last? He just had TJS so it's likely he'll make it out of the first round and go anywhere after that. Another solid catching prospect is something we need with possibility of Tyler Flowers moving from there.

Sox have been tied to some catchers and Lauman seemed to indicate they will have an interest grabbing one early in the draft (1st 5 rounds). Bailey is a nice looking prep who will go anywhere from the 2nd round to the 5th round and will take above slot money to sign.

My guess is it takes probably 1-2M to get him signed as he was a lock to go in the 1st prior to the injury.

Overall this draft, how are the Sox going this year? I haven't heard any rumblings outside of the 1st pick. Are they finally going to start going with high ceiling high schoolers within the first few rounds?

It is an urban myth that high school guys are the more upside/higher ceiling pick. That said, there is a shot they take one in the first, but than I think they'll focus on some college arms (they tend to like college arms a lot more). They'll look at catcher too but they'll probably go heavy on the pitching and outfield side early in the draft. I'd like them to nab a 3rd baseman and catcher in the first seven rounds though.

Cool, thanks for the info.

You'll get by far the best Sox related draft coverage and we'll back it up with interviews from some of the draft picks in the coming days/weeks.
