Southpaw and Fredbird

Featured Replies

Is Southpaw attacking him or dry humping him?

Southpaw is one of the more aggresive mascots out there.

Don't worry.... he's sterile.

I know, I learned the hard way.

Looks like a bear hug gone south. Fredbird looks like he's about ready to topple over. My wife saw someone try to push Fredbird off the upper deck balcony at Busch when she was a lass. Fredbird did not venture up there after that.

It has been posted on here that Southpaw is actually a she, not a he (assuming it has consistently been the same actor or whatever).

I also like the generic mascot fist-pumping in the pic.

A friend of a friend had a job driving the A's elephant around on a cart, but lost it after she asked too many players for their autographs. Ha.

Does anyone know what the hell type of thing Southpaw is? Was that ever established?

He always seemed like the personification of the plants in center field to me. I believe he debuted around the same time they were installed (wikipedia says his debut was June 13, 2004). He also has those pinwheels for buttons--which fits the centerfield theme.

That earned a chuckle.
