AMERICAN LEAGUE

The Chicago White Sox had a decent 2-1 week, but the main reason why their playoff chances jumped by nearly 15 percentage points was the bad week by division leader Detroit, who were swept by the Yankees, and by wild-card competitor Texas, who was just 1-2 (at home). The White Sox saw their chances of winning the division increase from 20 percent to 33 percent now that they are just 1.5 games behind Detroit. The Tigers still have the overall best chance of winning the AL Central. They have 10 more home games than road games this season and by that metric have the easiest schedule in the division.

The Seattle Mariners stayed hot, winning three of four on the road. They improved their playoff chances by nearly 10 percentage points. The Mariners do have six more home games than road games this season, which gives them a small but meaningful 16 percent chance of surprising everyone by winning the division. The Angels are still the clear front-runner in the West after a solid 3-1 week (all road wins vs. division competitor Oakland).

Finally, the Yankees swept the Tigers and improved their playoff chances by nearly four percentage points. They did not improve as much as one might expect because they were expected to win two of three from Detroit so a sweep was only one win better than expectations. The Yankees still have to overtake Boston as they are likely to lose the season series to the Red Sox. The Yankees are one game behind Boston and in simulations they are finishing one game back of Boston indicating these teams will stay neck-and-neck all season long.

Crazy to think of some of the possibilities after this weekend. We could either be up a few games or potential down 8 games in the standings! I just really hope KW waits until after Sunday before making any big moves.

Right, exactly what I was thinking... Nothing gained by over complicating it.

wasn't their a site who said the Sox still had a chance to lose the division after they clinched it or something goofy like that?
