So Chris Chelios is planning on signing with the Chicago Wolves. He's 47 but is probably still tougher than some of the younger players. The speculation is that this will be his last go at it so that he can retire in Chicago, even if not with the Blackhawks. However, there is still a chance he can use his time with the Wolves as a showcase for NHL teams. Either way, it's pretty awesome that a legend...at least a Chicago hockey legend will be skating with the Wolves. I imagine ticket sales will jump.

 

I grew up in Pittsburgh, so I didn't follow the Hawks like I do now. But, I would think this is huge for Chicago hockey fans.

There was brief talk about this in the NHL thread. I know the dude wants to play hockey, but at some point you have to hang them up, as you're making a mockery of your career.

 

Whatever, perhaps he looks good enough that some team adds him for the stretch run. I wish Chelly had never been run out of Chicago; he was one of the best defensemen of his era. That era, however, ended almost 10 years ago.

 

This is definitely not HUGE for Chicago hockey fans. The HUGE thing is happening in the United Center with a Blackhawk on its chest. This is a PR stunt and nothing more, and definitely not a reason for me to watch Chicago Wolves hockey.

It really is amazing if you think about it, there have been some older players that have just continued to play at a high level in hockey. They basically had to take Hull's stick away from him

I think Chelios could end up playing for an NHL team, but I would imagine his ice time would be limited. He could very well skate circles around some guys in the AHL and maybe even some in the NHL. But at 47, one would think his endurance would be low.

 

His desire to keep playing is not a surprise. Most hockey players have been playing since they were 5 years old. My son has been playing for 3 years, and I coached his teams for the first two. Even at that young an age, hockey gets into their blood. If they love the game, they are hooked. I for one would like to see a game at the Allstate with Chelios guarding the blue line.

I hope his time on the Wolves is very short.

He's always been one of my least favorite players, and I really would think twice about going to a Wolves game while he's on the roster.

 

Living near Grand Rapids, I know I'll definitely be going to the game the Wolves come to Van Andel to play the Griffins. That should be interesting, as they're the feeder team for the Red Wings and I'm sure he'll get a great ovation, but I just want to see him play in person once before he finally retires.
