Should the US consider selling its gold reserves?

Featured Replies

if these numbers are correct, and this is from October 2009....

The US currently holds 261,499,000 fine troy ounces in its reserves. US International Reserve Position, US Treasury

The amount today would be approximately $8,000 per troy ounce.

261,499,000 x 8,000= $2.09 Trillion

How is that right? Gold is a fraction of that price. Spot gold is about $1200 an ounce.

Plus, if you dump that much gold at one time you will depress the price severely with that much on the market at once.

Cash4Gold just offered the US $124.81 for it's gold reserves.

Gold is absurdly overbought as it is, so frankly if I'm the US government, I might consider selling some it now.

Really, it would be an intelligent, counter-cyclical move, which I'd like.

well if they did, you would have to do a slow sell, like the stock holdings in the banks and car companies.
