September 21, 201114 yr QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Sep 21, 2011 -> 12:58 PM) Isn't baseball getting way too complicated with sabremetrics? Yes and it's made a wanna be in bill James rich with stupid stats. Maybe he'll come up with a SAR, smell above replacement measuring how players pass gas....
September 22, 201114 yr A bad catcher will cost you pitches, plain and simple. It's not as big at the major league level as it is at say the HS Varsity level. It's not really about how it looks to the umpire, we're tracking it the whole way in. But a lot of it is perception. If you travel with a borderline pitch, that's a ball because it looks like a ball to everyone in each dugout. You can't call that s*** a strike all game and live to see the late innings. Same as if you pull a pitch that might be a borderline strike. You're showing me and everyone else it's a ball. You don't reward bad catching.
