White Sox All-Unusual Position Team

With Brent Lillibridge set to start at first base (where he has rarely played in the bigs), here’s a look at a White Sox All-Unusual Position Team

C—Mike Squires (1980)/Hank Allen (1973)

1B—Billy Pierce (1953)

2B—Chet Lemon (1980)

SS—Jermaine Dye (2005)

3B—Carlton Fisk (1981)/Paul Konerko (1999, 2000)

LF—Ozzie Guillen (1996)/LamMarr Hoyt (1984)

CF—Ron Kittle (1983)

RF—Ron Karkovice (1992)

DH—Omar Vizquel (2010, 2011)

P—Steve Lyons (1990)/Dave Martinez (1995)/Wayne Nordhagen (1979)

Closer--Mike Squires (1984)

Utility—Frank Isbell (1901-1909)

Notes:

*Mike Squires only left-handed catcher in franchise history

*Hank Allen is Dick Allen's brother

*Billy Pierce was moved to first in a game in order to return to the mound later in that game

*Chet Lemon made his first big league start at third base in 1975 ... He played two innings at 2B in 1980

*Jermaine Dye played the ninth inning at SS in Oakland in 2005 after Joe Crede was tossed and replaced at 3B by Chris Widger

*Carlton Fisk played one game at 3B in 1981. He also played 1B and LF in addition to C with Sox

*Paul Konerko was the Sox starting 3Bman in the 2000 home opener

*Aside from DH, LF was the only position other than SS Ozzie Guillen played with the White Sox

*Ron Kittle played one-third of an inning in CF

*Ron Karkovice also played LF. No errors in 3 career games in OF

*LaMarr Hoyt was listed at the starting LF and second batter at Seattle on Sept. 29, 1984 ... Jerry Hairston PH for him in the 1st

*Omar Vizquel made his first career start at DH on May 14, 2009 in his 2,753rd game

*Combined scores of games Lyons, Martinez and Nordhagen pitched in: Foes 40, Sox 8

*Mike Squires retired the only batter he faced at Detroit in 1984/last Tigers batter of the game

*Frank Isbell played every position between 1901 and 1909

I would have paid money to watch Ron Kittle play CF.

Lillibridge played first base last year.

Or Ron Karkovice in RF?

I tweaked the intro re: Lilly ... Should have known, too, because I was at most of those games at the Cell! I asked Ozzie if I could be the "low throws" infield coach. He said the job was taken by Vizquel, who had played some 1B too!

I would of loved to have seen Dye at ss and Widger at 3rd for a whole game.

I'm pretty sure Brian Daubach was in CF for at least one game the year he was with us.

Ozuna coming in as a reliever in the World Series in 2005 would have been a classic, as well.

Carlos Lee at 3B was pretty funny, too. I guess no funnier than Viciedo and Josh Fields.

Never got to see Mike Morse at SS at the big league level for the Sox.

Brooks Kieschnick played a lot of positions on the field and ended up a pitcher after disappointing as a hitter.

Maybe Craig Grebeck played 1B or OF a couple of times? Can't remember.

Viciedo catching would be pretty hilarious, or Lillibridge.

I gave Grebeck consideration for this team because of his time in the OF. He played 2B, SS, 3B, LF and RF in his time with the Sox. He is a favorite of mine!

Didn't Steve lyons play every position in one game? Sox were out of contention before the game.

It was in a crosstown game IIRC.

Not nearly as bad, and not CF. Karko had some degree of athleticism about him. But Kittle? :lolhitting

This made me go look at Brian Daubach's wikipedia page, which led to me finding out there used to be a team in the Can-Am league called the American Defenders of New Hampshire. Way better than Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Didn't Squires also play 3B? One of the only lefties to play there? Also the Hawk-inspired Fisk in LF? Just throwing some things out there...

I just reflexively got into the fetal position and started shaking with the mere mention of that.

From Wikipedia:

He became the first left-handed-throwing third baseman in at least 50 years on August 23, 1983 when he entered the game for Vance Law in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 10–2 loss to the Royals in Kansas City.[3] He would play thirteen more games at third base the following season, including four starts at the position.[4]

So there you go.

Not great, but nothing like Fisk in LF. For me that is the measuring stick of horrible.

Just sweeping away a few cobwebs, but I think the Pirates played LH Catcher named Dale Long. Also, I believe Gary Peters once played RF for the White Sox.

I think it would be fun if Lillibridge could play all nine positions in a game. Only if the Sox were out of contention and the game didn't mean anything.

Or if the Sox had such a huge lead in the Central that the game didn't mean anything. :headbang

What do you suspect his ERA would be? Or do you think we should adopt the Coach Pitch approach and have him stand next to the pitcher?

*Jermaine Dye played the ninth inning at SS in Oakland in 2005 after Joe Crede was tossed and replaced at 3B by Chris Widger

Your wording is a bit off on this one.

Crede started that game at SS. Widger started the game at 3B.

Dye replaced Crede at SS.
