The importance of walks

Featured Replies

While reviewing the sox and yanks matchup, i came upon an interesting stat. As you know, the yanks are one of the very best teams in baseball. I find it interesting that they rank 1st in the majors in walks and also they rank 1st in the majors with fewest walks allowed. I have always believed walks are important and this further proves that. It also proves what a smart team the yanks are......

And they definately make you pay for them. A walk here and there, boom, a three run homer and a Yankees win. Thats reason number 1 why Cotts should not start against the Yanks unless your looking for an automatic loss.

Hawk is always talking about how walks will come back to bite you and they almost always do. Any pitcher that can hold down the walks will always be that much more likely to get the "W".

On thomas slam, how many guys were on via the walk. See the Seattle Mariners, the more you make a pitcher work the better your chance of getting to him.

I agree with you 100%. It's no accident the Yanks are such a good team. You may hate 'em, but you have to respect 'em. They know how to play the game.

If a guy who bats first walks, it helps ur chances or scoring so much. Plus if u work the pitcher his pitch count will get higher and higher like Colon's did.

Plus, with most pitchers, a walk is 10 times more devastating than a hit is. With a hit, you can generally give the hitter credit and move on. With a walk, you're likely to dwell on it, and you tend to either 1) be more fine with the next hitter, which often leads to another walk, or 2) throw a pitch that catches too much of the plate for fear of falling behind in the count, and the guy tees off on it.

Hopefully Neal can keep the Yankee hitters off balance today and hit the corners (and hopefully we'll have an ump that CALLS strikes on the corners).
