Charting the waiver wire

Here is this midweek's list of players who were blocked this month when they were placed on waivers:

AL: Brendan Donnelly, Ben Weber, Alfredo Amezaga, Jason Johnson, Kerry Ligtenberg, B.J. Ryan, Bartolo Colon, Tom Gordon, Esteban Loaiza, Wilfredo Ledezma, Carlos Beltran, Raul Ibanez, Runelvys Hernandez, Eddie Guardado, Shannon Stewart , Jeff Nelson, Nick Johnson, Arthur Rhodes, Lance Carter, Travis Harper, Joe Kennedy, Victor Zambrano, Aubrey Huff, Francisco Cordero, Todd Greene, Frank Catalanotto.

NL: Stephen Randolph, Jason Marquis, Kent Mercker, Horacio Ramirez, Jung Bong, Chris Reitsma, Ray Olmedo, Brian Fuentes, Justin Speier, Mike Lowell, Juan Pierre, Octavio Dotel, Brad Lidge, Wilson Alvarez, Danny Kolb, Richie Sexson, Luis Ayala, Javier Vazquez, Orlando Cabrera, Jose Vidro, Vladimir Guerrero, Brandon Duckworth, Joe Beimel, Kip Wells, Jim Brower, Jesse Foppert, Jerome Williams, Tim Worrell, Jose Cruz Jr.

Wilson Alvarez. Wow.

Some that got through that shocked me: Scot Shields, Danys Baez, John Thomson, Kelvim Escobar, Orlando Hudson, Mike Bordick, Luis Vizcaino, Mike DeJean, Livan Hernandez, Tomo Ohka.

Wouldn't mind getting Baez, Ohka or Escobar

The guy who I would love to get ahold of for the future is Orlando Hudson. For this year and the future, Scot Shields.

E-Lo is on the waiver wire!

They all got blocked. That means they all got pulled off.

Ohka is pretty fun to watch.

Shields would be a really nice pickup.

Tell me if I'm reading too much into this year, but by putting Elo, Colon, and Gordon on waivers, what in the hell were we trying to accomplish? Did we put those 3 on for s***s and giggles, or is it possibly something else?

Sometimes you do it to get another player through. You try to trick teams into you just sending guys through, hoping that you can sneak a guy by.

I concur.

To expand on that...... Teams can't afford to claim every player they think will get traded, beceause they could end up getting stuck with a guy (and contract) they don't want.

Basically almost every player is placed on waivers at some point which helps keep teams from knowing which players the team may really deal or or which are susceptible of being let go. Since teams often claim a guy just to make sure that someone else doesn't get him in a trade, putting everybody on waivers makes the guessing game of which players may actually be trade bait and which ones teams wouldn't mind dumping much, much harder.

I know I am rambling, but the long and short of it is, that by placing Esteban Loaiza or Frank Thomas on waivers, it may someone else clear waivers that the Sox would like to trade or at least consider trading.

Picking up Shields would be awesome. This guy has had great success in the bullpen and rotation, has a great clubhouse rep, and is still very young. He would be a huge addition if we get him and can easily replace Colon if he walks off. It will come at a very high price though.
