Pitchers Hitting - the Annual Thread

Featured Replies

I do this every season, just before the first inter-league series. Here is a look at the MLB hitting track records for all pitchers currently on the White Sox roster...

Chris Sale: 0-for-2, 1 SAC, 2 K

Felipe Paulino: .143/.172/.161, 9 SAC, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 29 K in 67 PA (has 1 XBH, a double)

John Danks: .041/.098/.041, 3 SAC, 1 BB , 7 K in 25 PA (he has 1 hit)

Erik Johnson: n/a

Jose Quintana: 0-for-5, 1 SAC, 1 BB, 4 K

Nate Jones: n/a

Matt Lindstrom (DL): 1 PA, struck out

Daniel Webb: n/a

Jake Petricka: n/a

Scott Downs: .067/.125/.067, 10 SAC, 3 BB, 17 K in 58 PA

Donnie Veal: 1 PA, SAC

Ronald Belisario: 0-for-5, 3 K

Maikel Cleto: 0-for-3, 3 K

Not a good hitter in the bunch, but some guys we haven't seen, so maybe they can do something. Paulino looks like the pitching staff's best hitter.

Do pitchers bat in any of the minor leagues?

Combined career line of our pitchers: .081/.122/.087, 25 SAC, 66 K in 170 PA

Really not a fan of the interleague play spread out over the entire season.

I don't really have a problem with inter-league play but I really hate the pitchers batting. They have a specialized skill in throwing the ball at high speeds with precision. I don't need them to tear up hamstrings running to first, crashing into an infielder and ruining shoulders (Mark pryor anyone?) or any other opportunities to destroy that multi-million dollar arm. With few exceptions it is a more automatic out than Adam Dunn, not very exciting.

I think when it's two NL affiliates playing each other, they sometimes let the pitchers hit.

Not exactly Garland and Buehrle of yesteryear.

EDIT: OK, Buehrle was terrible, but he did homer. Garland was fairly decent.

I was present for Garland's home run.

Neal Cotts has a career .500/.500/1.000 batting line.

I hate this part of interleague ball. The switching of rules is completely unique to baseball and needs to die. Either employ the DH for all teams, or not at all.

I think the NL will pick up the DH within the next 20 years.

If someone mentioned Cotts I have to mention Cliff Politte , one at bat when he faked a bunt and then swung away that resulted in a base hit.

That was in Denver in 2005, it was an RBI single. His only at-bat as a member of the Sox.

Bump for Cubs series. Quintana was in OP. Now adding...

Hector Noesi: 2-for-4, both singles, and 2 K. He's hitting .500, FWIW, all PA from 2012 (did not hit in 2013).
