Success of out Minors Team

Featured Replies

is it me or does it seem that we are starting to have some positive news coming from

our minor league teams

or is this the yearly cycle of fools gold.

Several of the top prospects -- led by Tim Anderson and Frankie Montas -- are playing very well.

But as a group, the teams are horrible. They're all sub-500. Charlotte is embarrassingly bad and Birmingham is about 10 games under .500.

yes, I realize the purpose of the farm system is to develop several players for the big club.

But none of these teams are very good.

Your glass is half full; nothing wrong with that.

Anderson and Trey M both hitting very well. Sanchez and Micah, too. Couple of pitchers have stepped up. The mysterious unknown is out there with three international kids (Micker, Castilla, Done) about to get their professional baptism in Arizona in 10 days or so. Two high draft picks, one of whom might not sign but we don't know that yet, are about to start their careers. Sammy Ayala for round 3 of Rookie Ball.

We have close to zero pitching in the mid and upper minors. That, I suspect, is why the records are so poor.

Lower level teams have been playing much better lately, upper level not so much. Charlotte is awful, which isn't surprising since there's (virtually) no pitching talent there.

Charlotte's staff has been a revolving door of reclamation/recovery suckage, between Hanson, Paulino, Boggs, Surkamp, the mysterious EJohnson and others. Boggs by himself has probably cost them 5 wins, and has blown throughout, yet somehow remains. The Knights have "taken one for the team" this season - I'd hate to be season ticket holder there, though.

And can someone give me some good news regarding Bassitt and/or Lopez returning to action soon? Those two, on top of Cose, Brennan and other injury losses, could have really helped.

Last I spoke with both of them, Bassitt was targeting an ASB timeframe for return (which is pretty soon, if he meant the minor league one), and Lopez was "May or June", so should be soon. Bassitt info is from a couple weeks ago, and he just recently started throwing I think. Lopez I haven't talked with since April.

Brennan has started his throwing program, I'd think he shows up maybe in July (I haven't spoken with him). Cose had significant back surgery (I talked with him around March or April just before his surgery), is almost assuredly out for the full year, and may not come back at all.

That's sad about Cose. He was a sleeper prospect of mine. What did he do to his back that needed surgery?

And where do you think Brennan and Bassit start their seasons? Brennan in Kanny and Bassit in Birmingham?

Not sure what caused it, but Cose had to have a discectomy.

Leaving aside brief rehab starts, I'd guess Bassitt is in AA (McCully and Blough are suspect in that rotation), Brennan at Kanny. Just my guesses though. Lopez probably in A+.

Thanks for the update, 72. Hope to see something on the Baron's site before too long.
