supermaggs Posted June 23, 2003 Share Posted June 23, 2003 Sox took a big step in signing SS Robert Valido, described as a big competitor with five tool potential, it was questioned if Valido would sign since he had already committed to a florida college... Jeremy Reed is dominating Winston Salem, along with Ruddy Yan, and Ryan Wing... Tim Hummel is starting to show he can hit Triple A pitching, kind of like Crede in his first year at triple A not so hot, the next year he capitilizes, he is hitting .282. Cliff Brumbaugh is hitting .307 and Miles is hitting .306. Enemencio Pacheco is actually succeeding, as is Neal Cotts, who should be brought up pretty soon to Triple A... He is considered a slick fielding SS with suspect hitting(so he goes 2-4 with 2 RBI and 2 errors in his first game - go figure!) You are accurate on Hummel. Miles has been solid. Brumbaugh was released last week so he can play in Korea. Wing and Honel have been very good in W-S. Yan has cooled big time, only hitting .200 (approx) for the month of June. Still has 41 SB however. Mike Spidale has come back from an early injury and is hitting .302 with 15 SB. Pacheco has been very good. Cotts has been on the DL and has fought control problems despite great success. Doubt he will move up this year, or at least probably not soon. My guess is they see him as a utility guy. If he keeps hitting, they may change their minds, however. His ability to play all three helps the Sox either way. It gives them flexibility. You don't groom a guy to be a utility guy by using him that way in the Minors. You play him as much as possible and allow him to play different positions. There isn't a whole lot of pinch-hitting in the Minor Leagues. They have smaller rosters and player development is more important than avoiding a lefty-lefty matchup in most situations.
