Smoltz got to like 55 last year, didn't he? That's the closest that pratically anyone has ever gotten to it. As a matter of fact, I think a couple of closers were in the 50's last season..... Smoltz and Gagne (sp?) being two of the candidates if memory serves me correctly. cwsox Posted April 14, 2003 Share Posted April 14, 2003 a man of Thigpen's age could fall because of a stroke, because of angina, because of passing out due to a pressing anuerism, or purely slipped on wet pavement - I have fallen twice this past winter season and landed very hard both times, on ice - still feeling pain as I wracked my shoulder on the second fall - a person could fall because of sudden lightheadness which would have a pysiological basis - any speculation, including these, but even more assuming alochol, is conjecture that is way out of line. The White Sox were stunned to hear that Bobby Thigpen, the team's career saves leader, needed nearly three hours of surgery Friday to stem massive internal bleeding caused by a fall as he was leaving a hockey game the previous night. Thigpen, who lives in Florida, fell on the stairs as he was leaving the Tampa Bay Lightning-Washington Capitals playoff game at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. He was listed in critical condition and placed on a ventilator, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Dr. Kevin Hirsch, a trauma surgeon who operated on Thigpen, told the newspaper that Thigpen had significant bleeding around his pancreas and kidney. "But he was lucky in that the damage wasn't so significant that anything had to come out," Hirsch said. "I expect he'll keep his organs. This was a terrible situation that could have been a heck of a lot worse." Thigpen, who saved a major-league-record 57 games for the Sox in 1990, has participated in fantasy baseball camps for the team. Former teammate Frank Thomas, who learned of the accident from reporters, called Thigpen "a clubhouse leader, someone who would lay it on the line every day." "He's one of the guys we were hoping would come back as a coach here because he's such an inspiration when he's in the locker room," Thomas said. "I hope he gets through this." Trainer Herm Schneider planned to contact Thigpen's wife, Keri. "He's the best," Schneider said of Thigpen. "Pure wonderful." Thigpen went home Thursday night after being treated by paramedics at the arena. He thought he had merely bruised his ribs. After his condition grew worse Friday, Keri took her husband to Bayfront Medical Center. He will remain hospitalized for several more days, officials said. I'm sure it was once tougher, but I don't know when they changed it. I'm sure this record will get broken soon by some save specialist on a good team who will go in every single time there is a save on the line.
