La Russa is quickly making me hate Leury with all the playing time he‘s giving him.

For some reason the team has decided Collins is their backup catcher. Whatever. He’s a number 8 or 9 hitter, and Madrigal no longer makes sense at the bottom below people like Collins.

We mustn't dwell.  No, not today.  It's Michael Kopech day!

Robert was again swinging at that low and outside slider last night. Not sure putting Collins behind him will be any protection whatsoever just because he’s a lefty .

    This story sounds like BS.

Not to be too open to conspiracy theories, but the news that the Sox and Giolito have been concerned that he was/is tipping pitches last time throws a new wrinkle into this.

Rose is a great example of working hard to recover during rehab. He returned earlier than expected nearly ever time. The injury prone discussion is different.

I don’t necessarily want to rehash all this, but Derrick Rose was cleared by his doctors to play after ACL surgery and yet refused to join his team to play when they most needed  him. It was a giant controversy. Derrick Rose was once a healthy scratch and it was disgraceful display of self indulgence.

Pretty sure Derrick Rose's first injury was he cut itself with a knife that he cut an apple with. Shit happens.

That being said, Rose is not a great example of playing while  hurt or recovering.  But a water bottle is better than tripping over a gym bag 😛

Dude has been building arm strength for more than two years now. The idea he can’t throw innings is ludicrous. His arm should be stronger than ever.

look at Rodon. His arm was strong last year. But that’s not the same as command. All pitchers get fatigued as the game goes on, but its not velocity and strength that normally  goes with fatigue, its command. Takes time to build that innings endurance up. Tou look at what happened to Kopech last game, gave up a walk and a single because he lost the edge. He was still throwing hard. Side question though, but this season Kopech and Crochet are throwing 96-97 instead of 98-99. I hope it is intentional

I literally saw this happen. Was in LF corner so couldn’t hear anything but I saw it. He didn’t “throw” the ball at anyone. The ball was tossed. Some words were exchanged thereafter. Bullpen coaches told him to take a seat and that was that.

Kopech clearly shouldn’t be as bothered by heckling as he appeared to be but this is a non issue.

Ah, a little different report than ‘He had to be held back from going in the stands’

  8. A different player I would say no big deal. But Kopech in particular has to keep his mental approach to the job clean, otherwise it can affect his career. Obviously he has life issues to deal with, and should find ways to cope better.

Anyone else still trying to figure out why the fuck Collins got the start today?

Who knows. TLR is weird. Sometimes there is an over deference to veterans, and other times for some reason the team thinks Collins is a major league catcher and DH. They have been waiting for years for the guy to hit, and now that he can catch to the point he isn’t a total liability, thats gonna be enough for him to play and be the backup. As far as anyone can see, the Sox have a backup that isn’t  known as a defender, a game caller or a hitter.  Mercedes has better bonfides to be the backup at this point.

Sox are 2 games under .500 with a +13 run differential, 2nd best in AL. Doesn't always hold true but more often than not, the record moves toward the run differential.

That +13 breaks down as +15 in innings 1-3, +3 in innings 4-6, and -5 in innings 7-10, so late innings are definitely a problem.

Also, the 5 teams the Sox have played so far are a combined 34-20 (.630) when not playing the Sox. Haven't gotten to play any bad teams yet.

Good post. I just want to see them find ways to win games rather than go the other way.  Speaking of the longer term, The preferred  long term team building  approach for myself is  young speed in the draft early,  and less investment in college bats which hasn’t worked. Anyway, folks have seen the team find ways to lose rather than win as they could be, hence panic. Hopefully it works out as you emphasized.

Another issue is that if they plan on giving Grandal a lot of breaks (which is a solid plan), having Collins as the back up is a HUGE downgrade from McCann offensively.

Amen. Not sure what they could have done with the situation, but how many spark plugs a team can afford to  lose before a fanbase wonders where the edge went. For sure I dont think it is smart to manage the team depending on a guy like Collins, but that guy was a winner.

Even in 2018 the ball exploded off his bat. It doesn't happen anymore. What's the most logical explanation? That ability just doesn't disappear at age 25.

Right now, the most logical explanation is that he showed weakness between the ears when he accepted the excuse in the first place. I doubt real ballers go down that road ever. Fact remains his has always indicated a problem, and it’s probably not a physical problem.

Of course, Dane Dunning has a 0.69 ERA right now...

You can classify it as management making finishing moves on an unfinished team. It just speaks to the general delusion of grandeur within the entire organization. They did a good enough job as far as what they were doing. But they sort of quit before they were done.

I thought that Moncada's 2019 was sustainable because he was hitting missiles everywhere. Did I think he'd hit .300 again, no. But I did expect about .280 with 30 HRs. It seems like his bat speed and power is gone. He had elite bat to ball skills. No more. I don't know if covid is to blame or not, but I lean toward probably. Even in 2018 he was hitting missiles when he made contact. That just doesn't disappear at 25 years old if there isn't something else going on.

When a guy leans on excuses like he got Covid once, thats kind of a red flag.
