Couldn't they have snuck Grandal into this one?

Ohtani to Sox is a no go since they didn't make his initial preference list and he will likely receive $475-525 million anyway...
We want Ohtani here
We want JR gone
Obvious solution is to give Ohtani JR's ownership stake in exchange for signing with the Sox.

Gonna need to call up more guys now.

You can argue about whether or not this trade will pan out, but on paper this was a very good haul for 2 months each of a SP and RP.

Stroman (probably) vs Lynn (probably not)

Zach Martin unhappy in Dallas. Bears have the cap space to pay him and the draft picks to make a trade. Get it done.

I can honestly say the strike hasn’t made the slightest difference in my life. Keep it going and alienate as many people as possible.
I watch very little scripted TV but I do miss the late night shows.

Miles Robinson's stock is way down after the Gold Cup. 2 handballs against Canada and he didn't exactly look that much better than Miazga and Long. Ream, Richards, CCV, and even Zimmerman are probably ahead of him right now in the depth chart. I know he was injured recently, but still.
Central defense the weakest spot on the roster right now.

That wasn't even their second string. That was a C team at best. Mexico is using their best players (minus a couple of guys who are injured) in the Gold Cup in part because the US thoroughly destroyed them in Nations League last month. The USA sent a bunch of guys who won't be on their Copa America squad next year or even in the World Cup picture for 2026. Outside of the goaltenders, I'd be shocked if anyone who played on this team really factors in other than maybe one of the young players like Neal or Cowell if they really develop or Miles Robinson as a deep reserve center back.
No thanks to Qatar for fucking up the calendar and forcing the NL final so close to the Gold Cup. Would have been nice to see everybody's best.
-
The US better have its best players healthy in 2026 because their 2nd string is weak. Took PKs to beat Canada and then lost to Panama in PKs, which honestly saved them from a beatdown by Mexico in the final.

People keep saying this, but Jerry also hired Kenny, Schueler and Himes. All three were light years ahead of Hahn. Rick Hahn is 2-7 off-suit, the nut low.
The economics of baseball was different back then. It was easier to build a winning team without taking risks on the kinds of big contracts that Jerry will never approve of. As bad as I think Hahn is, I think the Sox with Hahn but a new owner are better off than the Sox with Jerry but a new GM, but of course the best option is if both are gone.
-
I will repeat - there is no point in replacing Hahn until there is someone different picking his replacement.

If Grandal isn’t moved by the deadline, I would release him for sure.
I wouldn't release Grandal if he can't be traded. It's not like he's blocking some super catching prospect.

Actually it was a very smart and safe pick. SS is a premium position. Since he can play SS, he can play 3B or 2B in the future. Plus if he is good and we don't need a SS, 2B or 3B, then he is a valuable asset to possibly trade.
Drafting SS, CF, P, C are always great moves because those positions are always in high demand. If you end up with a backlog at those positions, you can get good value in a trade (or in the case of SS or CF, move to another position). If you end up with a backlog of 1B/DH, it's harder to fix that, as we are seeing on full display right now.

Trade no matter what. Eat as much money as necessary to get the best return: Grandal, Giolito, Lopez, Andrus, Middleton, Anderson, Kelly.
Trade only if you get a really good return and don't have to eat salary: Lynn, Hendriks, Clevinger, Jimenez
Build around: Cease, Kopech, Robert, Moncada, Colas, Vaughn

The batters up in the 10th were Robert (walked), Eloy, Grandal, and Burger. I can’t imagine that any of these guys regularly practice bunting, asking them to do so is just taking the bat out of their hands.
They should all be regularly practicing bunting, and we've seen many times what leaving the bat in their hands has produced.

While portraying Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane in the movie version of Moneyball, Brad Pitt explained this line of thinking further: “If someone bunts on us, just pick it up and throw it to first. They’re giving you an out – just giving it to you. Take it. Say thank you.”
Bunting greatly decreases the expected number of runs for the inning, BUT bunting a runner from 2nd to 3rd with 0 outs greatly increases your chances of scoring one run in the inning, so a tie game in the bottom of 9th or extras is an exception to the rule.

He died, right? Can't think of any other reason Bummer gets the 11th instead of him.

100% of the time.
Doesn't matter who's batting.
Bunt the runner to 3rd.
Put pressure on the defense.

No other motorsports threads so I'll leave this here:
The #77 White Sox Chevy was one of the slowest in qualifying for tomorrow's race around Grant Park.
Must be sponsored by Grandal.
On a serious note, I looked into tickets and the cheapest seats were $450. We pay $130 each for our Indy 500 seats and those are really good seats.

I'm not going to downgrade him for not trading Cease because he can still be traded after the season and they could get a better return. For a guy with that much control you set a high bar and if nobody meets it, you keep him rather than letting him go to the highest bidder.
