QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 02:48 PM) http://www.investopedia.com/terms/v/vix.asp By its very natures down days create volatility, because it is changed divided by total index price. When you go down, you are dividing into a smaller number, so the VIX goes up. When it goes up, you are diving into a bigger number, so the VIX usually falls. It is down from 35 to 26 in the last two days reflecting the big rally's of this week. So I basically bought a lottery ticket that we have some big off days in the next month. I got the VIX part, why do you think they are going to "blow this thing up soon"?
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) Yes it did. I bought VIX in my account. I get the feeling they are going to blow this thing up soon. You're sounding like CKnolls. English please?

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) I just watched the speech over lunch. It wasn't just a really good speech - it was more than that. It was mostly not flowery or rah-rah like his stump speeches are. It was direct, made some really great points, and shied away from nothing. Its worth watching, for anyone here. Seriously. Awesome. I'll watch it later tonight when I get home (if I get to go home... )

Yea, I just read the article. If LEH would have given a s***ty report this morning, you bet it would have been 100 BPS. But IN MY OPINION LEH is lying their asses off. I'll just leave that where it is.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 01:45 PM) 75 basis point cut by the Fed Bank. Stocks were up about 250, now only up about 150. i wouldn't be surprised if we finishd down on the day. What the hell were they expecting if they are reacting negatively?

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) "What the world needs now is love, sweet love" - Barry Manilow. No it doesn't.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) Am I reading this wrong, or did you use a double-negative there and assert essentially that all of us are racists? Was that a deliberate point that I'm somehow just not understanding? Noooo... I just typo'd it. We're NOT racist was the point. Ooops. For once, I was being nice. I wasn't meaning to sound like Obama, but apparently I do. I just can't work a room like he can.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) Canada to recognize Kosovo independence, Serbia recalling ambassador Full Story http://www.macleans.ca/canada/wire/article...ontent=n031869A I think Canada will be one of the first, if not, the first, country with a full-fledged, legitimate separatist movement of their own to recognize Kosovo Wow. That's gutsy. I wonder how long it will take for Quebec to start up their cries for independence?

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 01:29 PM) Easy there Obama...

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 01:10 PM) And I think that's essentially what Obama says in the speech and has always said. The two of you don't really disagree. I'm also impressed that he didn't completely throw Wright under the bus, and I think I overreacted to the issue personally. While I liked the speech I hope it has a positive effect on his campaign, and I'm not sure if it will. *fingers crossed Maybe I should be a politician. Man, what is it? I'm agreeing with all you 'libs' today... Seriously, all junk aside that we banter back and forth, most of us aren't that far apart on main issues that confront us. None of us here on this forum (at least I'd like to hope) aren't racist, and really, are looking out for what's best for America (Canada, in your case, Kip). Or hell, throw out the nationality. We're looking for what's best for people. That's all that matters. So we disagree on how we get there sometimes... but I wouldn't want anyone here to be any less successful then I am, in fact, I wish everyone could be at least or more successful. You know why? Because we're all better for it. Ok, I'm done being all sappy. Back to the snarky Kaperbole.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 11:19 AM) Here is the thing - and this is going to sound convoluted, but I think its key. I would agree that for the most part, being of a minority race is not in itself a huge detractor for an individual to succeed in this country. BUT, at the same time, I agree with Obama that there is still a significant issue of racial division in this country. So, how can these two seemingly conflicting facts both be true? Two things: economics, and education. It is simply reality that blacks and hispanics are much more often living at lower levels of income, and further (and possibly more important), they live in places with crappy schools. Worst of all, those two things tend to be attached to one another (ala Savage Inequalities). And THOSE things are the biggest barriers. So the question shouldn't be framed as, can a black/hispanic/asian/white person succeed. it should be, why, after all these decades, are the economics and education of minorities still so disparately different than whites? And what can be done about those things? No, I totally agree with that. I've seen it, I've lived it. The town I'm from in Indiana isn't exactly white, but it's not as bad as some. Economically, it's horrible. I've seen what it's like, and I was lucky that I was able to obtain my education and get out of it. How DO we overcome that? But see, I sat in the same classrooms in a predominately African American high school... and learned from the same teachers. Why do I embrace things, that other kids don't? It starts at home. I think that's why Obama is ringing a tone... because he actually comes across as talking to those people. Now, I personally don't think he is, he's just found a topic that resonates.
-
QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 11:04 AM) Judging by the comments I see people making on places like CNN, most of the people talking haven't even bothered to watch or read the speech yet. Which is pretty disappointing and ironic. Ironic that people will say something like "it's just another speech" or "I don't care what he says, blah blah blah" when everything he needed to address hit the nail on the head... but they still want to buy into the headlines and soundbites, and take them at face value. I just read it... it is a good speech. I would like to watch it (I'm sure it will get linked sometime soon). I'm sure he delivered it well...
-
QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 10:17 AM) Yeah, so? You know something, that might not be completely true but it's based in truth, at least historically, and that's the way many blacks feel. People don't really like to bring it up in mixed company, and I know that white people don't want to hear it because they don't want people to say they're racist when they feel they're not, they think it's unfair which is understandable. But pretending that this country hasn't had devastating racial problems that linger to this day (albeit to a significantly lesser degree, after much progress), or hiding your head in the sand and condemning people who bring up reality is pretty ignorant if you ask me. And as I read comments across the Internet, that's exactly what's happening. For me personally we all have equal opportunity to succeed. Why do African-Americans who live in inner cities rise to the top of their respected professions, when they could just as easily end up in jail? Because someone was there to mentor them. Because someone was there to help them understand that is the American dream, not because some white guy who doesn't know them or their plight are going to keep them right in that socio-economic class. I have friends that are Mexican-American, African-American, Phillopeano-American (spelling), whatever. And they are very successful people. They didn't let the crap that gets spewed about the great white satans knocking them back exist in their minds. It's sad to me that people get brainwashed into thinking they can't be successful. You have to teach kids that they can do what they want and be successful. You have to reward them for successes and through discipline build them up from failures. Race has nothing to do with that. Now, when you have a "high roller" preacher up there saying the things he is, #1 of course he's opening himself up for video clips like this. I know better and realize that he doesn't say this stuff all the time, but he wants people to buy into this stuff because it helps him "rule the roost" so to speak. #2, it's all about selling something to people to get them to continue to buy into something that feeds a process. In this case, it's that white people want to keep African-Americans "down". That's poppycock for those that have half a brain. I realize that there are racists among us, but I hope that people like me and most of you out there will overcome that by simply looking at people for what they are... human beings, without any differentiation other then heritage and culture.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 07:58 AM) No way of knowing honestly, but from watching news networks you'd think it was the foundation of everything Wright preached for his entire career. I will say this though, when pastors of black churches start talking about race relations, it does get pretty fiery. Usually not the point of outright racism, but still toeing the line of political correctness (at least what you'd be used to seeing on TV) I know better then that. But, the fact is, the undertones are there always. It's his style and his belief that african americans are being held down by "rich white folks". Does he say it every week? Probably not. Does he believe it? Absolutely. Does Obama? Probably, but of course he can't come right out and say that. Duh.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 06:11 AM) You know, all you guys who all of a sudden are insinuating that Obama is some kind of closet racist where he has been going to this church for the past 20 years to be indoctrinated with hatred and contempt for white people and America based off a handful of video clips, I kind of feel sorry for how easily you're manipulated by the media. I just don't see how you could just jump to such wild and ridiculous conclusions and pretend like that's all there is to know, and nothing else. It's a glimpse into who Obama puts stock in and some of what he believes. You don't associate with people like this for 20 years and not believe some of it. Do you hang around people like this for (again) 20 years if you don't believe anything they say?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 17, 2008 -> 03:01 PM) Dammit dude, you posted this as I was defending you! Touche. I have all these damn things in my head and can't keep them all straight anymore. It sucks getting old...

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 17, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) you mean 527s D'oh. Yes. F'in accounting crap on the brain.

I still want no part of Hillary Clinton appearing on a ballot. Even if there's a 1% chance of that happening, she's too damn close to the White House. You know, either candidate is going to get vetted - it's going to be an uphill climb once the Re-pube-licans start their attacks... McCain won't directly, but you know the 501© 3's will.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 15, 2008 -> 08:39 AM) No, I confess, you've got me down. I'm really just looking for the next Ronald Reagan so we can defeat the coming commie menace. Anyone who posts a thread about Hugo Chavez that is not unstintingly gushing about poor, innocent, beautiful Hugo, freedom fighter for the masses, champion of the downtrodden, is clearly a paleoconservative who gets off whenever any discussion of Star Wars comes up, who waits desperately for the next champion of the right to swing into the WH like Indiana Jones and crush every worker everywhere and the principled warriors who have no thought but the dignity of the worker. Oh, unmasked! Brilliant.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Mar 17, 2008 -> 08:13 AM) NPR said today that the Fed will be cutting interest rates a full percentage point tomorrow, or at least its expected to do so. Man. What a trainwreck. And it is getting worse by the hour it seems.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Mar 16, 2008 -> 01:49 PM) Chickens really coming home to roost on this one. And just another in an endlessly long list of reasons why I don't trust churches, religion, or the obsessively religious. I have no idea why people like Michelle and Barack, of such a high quality, would go to a church like this. It's maddening. Well... now maybe we're learning more about the real Michelle and Barack? Hmmmm.

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Mar 15, 2008 -> 10:35 PM) Im sure Fox will cover it. I agree with everything you said though and thats the point I was trying to get across. He isnt going to say he agrees with this no matter what because it would kill him in the election but I find it impossible to believe all of this is just a coincidence and he doesnt agree with any of it because if he didnt he wouldnt have stuck around him for so long. Obviously every candidate has skeletons in their closet but Im sick of the media, and people defending Obamas every move, acting like he is different and he isnt capable of something like this. It will all get covered. He has to get nominated first.
-
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 14, 2008 -> 01:53 PM) This is nothing, and it won't play in the general election. Obama can point to many times in the past when he's repudiated this guy's beliefs. If McCain tries to go after this, he'll be hit twice as hard on his "spiritual advisor" and the Falwell stuff. It's a nonissue and a nonstarter. You're exactly right, but not for the reasons that you think you are. Or maybe so. I dunno.
-
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 14, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) If the whole mantra behind that church was those things, then you're dam right it reflects on you. I would hardly compare this pastor to some things you heard in a homily a few times. I would compare his church to that nutjob's church that protests the funerals and stuff. It seems the whole reason for it being is to preach hate. If I had a friend at either of these churches, they can both go f*** themselves. Those rich white folks hold everyone down! Only Obama can correct this.

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Mar 14, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) OK, how long until you get the posts about all the evil-spewing right-wing evalgelicals who have backed or still back candidates? You know, trying to deflect by saying 'well, your side does it too'. That said, is it any wonder why Michelle Obama hasn't felt proud of America until recently? And right on cue...
