I know its hard to compare a position player to a pitcher, but during the Red Sox Dan Duquette era he rushed many pitchers to the minors including Paxton Crawford, Brian Rose, Casey, Sun Woo Kim, Jin Ho Cho etc. that ended up draining the Red Sox minor league system for years. We all know the kids got talent, but whether or not he can perform at a major league level this season is the question, and when you have Carlos Lee under contract among others, I say leave Reed in the minors and use others such as Konerko to bring in a starter.
